I have seen some really good pics of camera rigs on cars, are people making there own or buying them?

Thanks
Nick

I bought a cheap suction cup mount the other day, I've yet to try it out properly but I'm going to make sure I secure it with a length of strong cord too as I don't quite trust it with my camera.

I built my own mount.

Ebay double suction cup with a bolt through it, pan tilt tripod head and a combination of rubber and washers for damping. My first shot with it is in the Random Photos thread. It's a bit restrictive though - you don't get much of the car, so it's more useful for driving and light trails (which is what I wanted).

I'm gonna build another with a tripod and three single-cups, to get more distance/ elevation from the car.

Bought ones I've seen are upwards of £200 for a rig or £35+ for a mount

Check out the shop at Fast Films for more buying info

I'm making one atm. I bought a single suction cup and mount from www.b-hague.co.uk ages ago (also see www.cameragrip.co.uk) and have just got a dual cup setup off ebay 2nd hand and will add various tubes and brackets to that in the future.

Was gonna go down the cheap route of buying the industrial suction cups used by glaziers but then saw that one on ebay and figured I'd do it properly for safety's sake.

Just waiting (impatiently) for it to all turn up.

I spent a fair bit on mine and with hindsight would not have done so.

Had I known of the existence of this thread on another forum I'd have saved a lot of cash and would have a better setup as well.

It is good fun though!

Some simple details on my rig are here. I'd go for a single bar and 2/3 cup method if I was starting again.

I use a rig from http://www.b-hague.co.uk/ its a 3 suction cup job. A little time spent planning before setting up the rig will pay dividends in post.

full car 3 cup mount:

Of course cropped rig shots are much quicker & easier to do and can still create a very effective shot.

What car is that Steve ?

And Nick - Love your shopped motion pic you linked too, but was it really worth 2 hours in front of the pc ?

Could you have not taken a similar true action shot ?

I've got a basic Manfrotto suction mount off Fast Films, and then bought an extension arm for it, not long enough to capture the whole car, but gives some good results, i'll try and post some when i get home.

Sometimes it can be a pain getting it all set up for that perfect angle/shot, but its well worth it in the end.
Not that great with cameras, but much worse with Photoshop so i wouldn't even know where to begin with editing the rig out, hence why i've never gone for a full rig.

some awesome shots there, loving the TT.

Isn't that silver car the one that was on Top Gear last night?

I wouldn't bother with a rig until your static shots are up to scratch. You'll make the same mistake as many others and take hundreds of 'okay' rig shots and hundreds of awful statics. Happens almost everytime, myself included.
