Right I know I could do a search but no doubt the advi given would be different due to photography types. Maybe this could be made into some sort of sticky if you lovely people offer me some advice.

Budget - £500/£600

Experience - Bridge Camera - Fuji s6500fd - 2 years

Types - Motorsport, outdoor landscapes - No studio work

I seem to have got it into my head that I want a 450D ... Size, features etc etc.

Then onto lenses. I have no idea as mine was fixed. what is the 18-50mm kit lens etc etc. What lens for motorsport - landscapes.

Thank you for your help.

I tried reading here last night but really think some specific help would be more suited.

If you own the type of camera you offer experience on could you please post som photo's.

Scott

I've got a Canon 450D, bought it with a 18-55 kit lens and also a 70-300 Tamron lens from Jessops back in September. Cost was £550 ish, plus you get £50 cash-back. Have a look under the 'Random Photos' thread for some of what I've done so far. I can't vouch for their greatness but I'm happy. It's all a learning curve anyway.

I think the 40D has a greater frames-per-second rate than the 450D which may suit motorsport photography, but overall I'm happy with the 450D.

Both lenses came as part of the Jessops bundle: http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/Cam...

I'm at work so can't post pics up right now but page 114 has a particularly nice one of mine.

I've not challenged it enough so far to find out about battery life, though I'm fairly meticulous when it comes to charging batteries on things.
I think it's a fairly simple camera to use, though adherence to the RTFM rule helps there. The more you understand the cameras capabilities the more you should get out of it.

You'll be best off going to a local camera shop and having a look at one or two in your price bracket and see how they feel.

I just took a 450D for 4 weeks to Thailand carrying it around with me most days and only charged the battery twice with the camera left on all day.

It's a great camera and the results are pretty stunning though I used it with 2 of Canon's best lenses: 24-105 F4L IS and 70-200 F4L IS.

I took it because it was smaller and mush less hassle than my 1DS Mark II and chose it over my 40D because it fit in my small camera bag with the above lenses and my Lonely Planet book!

Best budget lenses for the 450D would no doubt be the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS due to their quality/price/size combination.

If you look at PH photographic classifieds you may find a certain member's 450D for sale there....

Photos taken with EF-S 18-55 IS : http://www.pbase.com/cameras/canon/ef_s_18_55_35_5...
Photos taken with 450D : http://www.pbase.com/cameras/canon/eos_digital_reb...

Most of them will be taken by amateurs, giving you a good idea of what you could achieve. Also beneath each photo will be details of shutter speed, aperture, ISO etc. giving you tips at the same time!!!

Would a second hand 40d be a better buy?

I would buy the second hand 40D over the 450D certainly, but they are still expensive as they are still being sold alongside the 50D well into next year...

Personally I prefer a larger camera like the 40D but I did find that the 450D was quicker to use in that controls such as ISO, metering, AF have dedicated buttons that you can set speedily while looking at the rear of the camera (next to the LCD).

I'd say the 450D is quicker to get acquainted with, especially for a novice. The 40D has dual-function buttons and you need to look at the top screen and use the front or rear control wheels to chnage settings which could be a bit confusing at first.

It's a matter of preference: I used to use Nikon but now find Canon more logical in layout as I find I trawl through Nikon's menus for ages before finding the setting I'm looking for.

I'd go the extra pennies to get the 55-250 IS as the telephoto choice. Bargain basement lenses like that Tamron are OK but pretty nondescript.

If you wanted to get the 450D new (i.e. instead of buying my bargain example!) you could get it with the 18-55 IS for about £450 and warehousexpress have the 55-250 IS for £190 (everyone else has it for quite a bit more).

Jessops are never a bargain retailer...

(a used) 40D for sport/motorsport over the 450D any day.

dSLR batteries last forever, 600+ shots usualy, there very low power because they dont run the chip or LCD all the time, you can extend that by limiting review time and screen brightness etc.

The IS kit lens is all you need in a walkabout unless you want f2.8.

Lanscapes can be taken with any lens (love my 10-20 and 70-200) get used to the kit lens before you plumb for a 'landscape' lens. Also add in some filters (ND/ND grad and CPL).

As for a motorsport lens, tricky on a budget the 55-250IS or whatever mentioned above is probably bargain bucket decent.
