Used Canon 350D v New Canon 1000D v New / Used Nikon
Discussion
As above, and along the same lines as a few other recent posts.
Want to get a DSLR on a limited budget, have borrowed a friends 350D and liked it, but have read some good reviews of the 1000D and there is a lot of talk about the Nikon D40's.
So which is the best choice?
Am I right in thinking that as the Nikon D40 doesn't have an anuto focus in the body, the required lenses will be more expensive?

No, it just means you have use AF-S lenses (or HSM if Sigma). Most new lenses are AF-S and I'd say they represent the mainstream now. AF-S is fast and quiet, superior IMHO to the older screw-drive lesnes.M005 said:

D40, D40x and D60 don't have a motor so are only compatible with AF-S lenses. Most of Nikon's recent zooms are AF-S now. You just lose the possibility of autofocusing with some of Nikon's lovely primes or older AF and AF-D lenses which probably won't affect the target market of these cameras.Want to get a DSLR on a limited budget, have borrowed a friends 350D and liked it, but have read some good reviews of the 1000D and there is a lot of talk about the Nikon D40's.

1000d is rubbish
Really? I've been looking at budget DSLRs and was thinking of one of these. From the reviews I've come across I got the impression they are pretty well thought of?I do agree that the cheaper Canons are a bit too small and light . I got a battery grip to fit to mine to bulk it up a bit. But cameras are definately a personal thing, some people loves Canon cameras other hates them and love Nikons, so I'd always advise having a look at all of them to see which feels best to you.
Thanks for the inputs.
I have read the reviews of the 1000D and whilst there are limitations listed it does seem to come out quite well, and to get perfection the budget needs to be huge.
I currently have a Canon Ixus 860 and apart from borrowing a DSLR on a couple of occasions have no other experience, so I don't need every feature, more something to get me started and keep me satisfied for a few years.
Due to age differences there are no direct comparisons between it and the 350D, hence making the decision to pick up a used 350D from ebay or a new 1000D not a straight forward one.
Threw the Nikon D40 into the mix as it seems to get a regular mention on here and was in a recent comparison test with the 1000D and a Sony in a camera magazine, they concluded Sony, Canon, Nikon.

A prospective buyer really needs to pick up an example of each intended purchase to see what they feel like and see if some of these small cameras are OK to use. I know it's not easy, especially when you see such bland statements on forums like "the Canon kills the Nikon" or "Nikon is better than Canon" and I'm not really talking about this forum, you should see the Canon 1D, 1Ds, 5D forum on DP Review to believe the puerile comments from people with the "best gear available" talking about how they "won't buy a 5D Mark II becuase it has a delete button in the wrong place" and stuff like that!
I think anyone new to D-SLRs should maybe get a book on the basics first to try and get a feel for what the controls are so you can understand what controls your are likely to use and how easily accessible they are before looking at cameras.
Having said that Canon and Nikon's ergonomics are getting better all the time and I haven't found a camera that has a poor layout from the 2 leading manufacturers who obviously are looking closely at what each other are doing...

That particular forum drives me mad, especially at the moment with the whole 5D2 black dots crap - I have never met a bigger bunch of pixel peepers, I wonder if they go round wearing 100% magnifying glasses. I love this forum as it is full of genuine, nice, not easily offended, resonable people who are not religiously fanatical about their equipment choices. We had the Canon/Nikon wars in this forum a couple of years ago and people quickly realised it was pointless... Threads like this full of genuine balanced opinion are what makes PH great.

I have a 350D, though I havnt shot with a 1000D I have with a 400D and 450D.Due to age differences there are no direct comparisons between it and the 350D, hence making the decision to pick up a used 350D from ebay or a new 1000D not a straight forward one.
1000D has a higher mp sensor, 10mp vs 8mp, its prehaps a touch better.
1000D has the same AF module as the 350D
1000D has a better LCD.
It shoots slower in RAW is about its only drawback, that and it uses SD cards not CF.
Thanks Rob and others.
I have been keeping my eye on 350D's on ebay but they seem to be going for silly money, and for <£50 more I can get a brand new 1000D.
The Canon money back offer will still be on after Xmas, so I may wait and see if there are any sale bargains to be had.

Shame, I just sold a 350D body in its box with evry accessory for £132. I was a bit disappointed though it seems they are worth between £125 and £165 for body only. Good value for an 8mp D-SLR I would say...I have been keeping my eye on 350D's on ebay but they seem to be going for silly money, and for <£50 more I can get a brand new 1000D.

Hijacking slightly:
Looking to buy a dslr as a completely newbie, but want something easy to use. Will not really be used for action shots but does need good quality pics, especially with poorish lighting.
I've been looking at the following:
Nikon D40
Nikon D60
Canon 1000D
Canon 450D
Nikon D80
I'd be getting them with the lens kits and would want them (the lens) to be sufficient for at least a while. I've read that the new Canon kit lens are quite good, but are they better or same as the Nikon ones?.
The D60 and 1000D seem to be natural competitors and pricewise very close, but for about £100 or so more the 450D and D80 are within reach. Not sure they are worth the extra, or whether I should just go for the D40 at £215 and just buy a new body once I've learnt a bit of skill with the D40? What would the recommendation be?
The Canon viewfinder thing seems a useful bonus and would probably be a help. I've held both and the Nikon felt marginally better, but not a deal breaker and in some ways I preferred the Canon's slightly less weight. A friend who used to be into his photography loves Nikons but even he's a little unsure what would be best for me!! lol.
Looked at lots of sample photos and there doesn't seem to be much between the D40 and D60 so wondering whether it was worth the upgrade?
The Nikons seem to have slightly more vivid colours judging by the samples, the Canons seemed a little bit "cold".
Would love a recommendation please! Cheers.

Theres quite a scope on all of them to adjust the default jpg processing in camera.
But TBH you'll probably shoot RAW and all that gets sorted later on your PC.
IMO the canons are better than the D40/60 in every respect, D80 is a step up the chain in level but quite old so the 450D competes with it quite well.
I dont think the 450D lacks anything (prehaps apart from movie now) that you'd find yourself missing later, ulike the others.

I wouldn't decide just on which one has the best kit lens. The trouble with asking on here is that Canon users will say the Canons and Nikon users the Nikon. I'm a Canon user so out of the two Canons you mention, I'd say go for the 450D. It's nearly the same price as the 1000D but is a much better spec.
