Bloody Canon software!!!
Discussion
Why are computers so bloody difficult???
I've got XP (SP2) on the PC, and use CS3 for my photography editing. Nice, powerful, user-friendly. Great.
Except I've borrowed my Dad's old laptop for a bit, and want to take some RAW files out and about over Xmas to stop me getting bored. But it's on SP1 as he never bothered to update it.
Now CS3 requires SP2 or greater to install. So that's no good.
But "a-ha!" I think - I've got the Canon software on a disk somewhere...some PH'ers say that's a decent bit of kit. So I find the disk and install it...except it's the disk I got with the 20D, and the software won't recognise 40D RAW files for some reason!!!

OK, no problem...I must have a similar disk with the 40D...and indeed I do - v.31.1 not v.9.1 - great! Uninstall the old stuff, install the new stuff. But there is a problem...because this disk only has "EOS Viewer", not "EOS Picture Viewer". And it won't do any editing of RAW files!!!

AAAARRRRGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've just wasted an hour and a half of my evening on that f'n laptop! And I still haven't got anywhere. Someone please tell me I'm missing something obvious and useful?!?
Or alternatively, is there any (GOOD) freeware on the web I can download and use for a week or so while I'm not at home? (Caveat here is the laptop isn't on the net, only the desktop)
Thanks,
M.

It's not computers being difficult, it's camera makers changing the way their RAW files are made with each model. Put it this way - Adobe make software but they're smart enough not to try and make cameras!
Hopefully one day this RAW malarkey will be 'plug and play' or standardised in some way.

DIW - also found DPP, but the disc I got looks like a cock-up - it covers up to the 20D.
Peter - my Dad is 150 miles away, and I can't connect the laptop at my home (don't have wireless yet)! So online updates are out, as I said. But I will pester him when I return it...this has been such a pain!!!
Canon website...wasn't particularly user-friendly, so I gave up. I've downloaded Picasa 3 plus trials of Lightroom 2 and Rawshooter Essentials, so will try all 3, see what 'feels best' (assuming any work in SP1 and don't need to download from the net!

Ok - I'm missing something. How about plugging in the laptop via a network cable?
I'm assuming it has one?Without using something like Picassa or QImage or IrfanView, the Canon updates are the way to go.
