So much for testing out the new 2.8 I bought frown

Used a rocket blower on bulb mode and this happened. Now all I get is ERR on the display (unsurprisingly)

Should I have a go at fixing it or best left to a repair shop? Given Nikon quote 3 weeks before they'll get around to looking at it, then whatever it needs doing I oculd be without it for a while

furious

I'll check out Lehmanns and see if they have a quicker turnaround, I think the one you posted is for "proper" cameras more than my humble D80

Why the furious ? Their site says 'Nikon D70/D80' so I'm not sure what you're worried about.

I wouldn't have wasted by time posting the link if I didn't think they'd be able to help you.

Either way it sure looks like it needs a new shutter. You may find it's better value to lose it on Ebay needing fixing and pick up a used D80...

That was my thinking as well. Though by used D80 I obviously meant new D300.

Yep, its more that I wanted to use it tomorrow really but cant. I've still got the D40 but the Sigma is the non HSM.

I could always go shopping for a D90...scratchchin

Just a thought - is this covered on your home insurance?

I believe so. I've got accidental damage cover and could make a legit claim

rofl Carry on dude.

You'll be lucky to get anything fixed inside two weeks I think - that's why pros have a spare body, or a priority fixing service, or both.

Have you tried using 'B' and a lenscap? nuts

With reference to the other thread about D300 NEFs, well I did eventually get a D300, mainly for the better noise performance, but some of the images definitely look 'different'. I haven't done any scientific testing yet so can only file it under 'weird'. I need to pile in loads of curve and lighten the midtones to get back to what I'd call normal.

The D300 price is a bit steep for my taste and ability, I think I had this thought with the D200 when changing up from the D40, and the 80 suits me at the moment.

The D90 comes across as a bit too gadgety for my liking with the video, maybe I've misunderstood where it's pitched though.

Think I'll have a wander around tomorrow and see if I can get a look at one or the other

Is that broken or just dislodged?

I would try a home fix (but I'm careful and can manipulate small things) then fleabay if it fails. If you've broken the shutter its going to be getting on for £200 I would think.

Because I'm a ham fisted nob. I've been having dust problems for a while on the D80 and couldnt seem to shift it. It's what I think was causing all the flare and general crapness on the 10-20 shots I stuck up.

I was testing this new Sigma 18-50 going through to F22 and it was still there, so thought I'd get the rocket blower a bit closer than normal and see if I could give it a really good blow out and just caught the edge of the shutter filter thing with the red bit of the rocket while I was pulling it out. You can see the rest...

In hindsight I really wish I'd just sent it off to Nikon for cleaning. I'm going to see what the contents insurance is like, otherwise I'll just send it off to Nikon for an assessment, there's no way thats covered in the 2 year warranty.

On the upside I'm now the proud owner of a new D300 bounce

And I even remembered to buy a CF card smile

Sorry to hijack the thread, but does anyone have any experience of using these guys on a Canon lens? I have a 300mm F4L which I picked up used recently and frankly its not very sharp, in fact you might even say out of focus. Certainly my 70-200 knocks it into a cocked hat which is a bit disappointing.

However, if it could be fixed that would be ace.

andy being as I shoot cannon I think I was more concerned about using the bulb method to open the shutter, surely teh camera has a nice sensor cleaning function that forces the mirror lockup and shutter open?

Sadly not, not on that model anyway

"The Nikon D80 doesn’t incorporate any physical means to shake-free dust and instead relies on creating a dust reference frame for automatic retouching of marks in software later. The big difference between this and Canon’s implementation though is the D80 reference frame can only be applied to RAW images and you’ll also need to pay extra for the Nikon Capture NX software"

Whether that's a repair job, or simply an AF-tuning issue, or a duff lens I don't know. However you could also try giving these chaps a call and seeing what they think:

http://www.camera-repair.co.uk/

NB: I've never used them but they do say they're an authorised Canon repair centre. Unfortunately for me they don't do Nikon, which is why I ended up using Fixation.

Cheers. Fixation say they are Canon authorised as well and they would be very convenient for me - easy enough to drop it off in person. It was really to see if anyone had any experience of them with L lenses.
