Looking back at them I see what you mean they are quite soft. Any advice on how I might improve my technique in the future?
All the shots apart from the Evil looking bird were shot with the 450d's kit lens, a UV filter and probably polarizer.
I've uploaded a few more shots from the trip as well now,

my harbor bridge pics at night didn't come out at all though.
I used a 20 second exposure with a tripod and release cable to get that shot. Alot of people were shooting the same scene hand held and I can't help thinking they were also dispointed with the results.I was also lucky they were testing the nye projectors.

PS love the BW opera house shot.
Thanks, I was really happy to get the shot. It was a candid taken on a very busy summer afternoon, I saw the girl sitting on the steps by herslf and just for a second the crowds cleared and I could get just her isolated with the opera house.I'm sure if I'd gone back in the early hours with a model I could of got a sharper, better exposed shot, but that would be less real to me.
