Hi,
I'm considering upgrading from a Canon G9 to an EOS 450D with it being my first SLR, There are plenty of deals on google shopping and Amazon with and without lenses but I'm not sure if the lenses are any good or not, any guidance would be great smile
"What I would use the lenses for?" well, eventually I would consider taking it underwater in a housing doing wide angle and macro, but of course would like zoom too for on land. I remember someone once telling me the Tokina 10-17 fisheye is a good starting lens if i am to take it underwater too?

Cheers
Woody smile

Plenty of deals? I've recently been hunting for a 450d for the right money and no one has them in stock anymore. I think there was a mad rush to get them before Monday (last day of £50 cashback offer). Luckily I chanced upon a new 1000d kit for £269 which is sat by me right now. smile

I had a good look on the various Flickr groups before pressing the trigger and fwiw, I didn't see any perceptible difference between the two models. I think spot metering might have been the only thing that I would have possibly wanted, but by the time I get to worrying about that kind of thing I'll have probably upgraded the body smile

lol underwater housings for dSLR's are pricey and you realy need lights too.

450D + the 18-55IS kit lens is a pretty solid combo tho.

If you want the flexibility of an SLR then get one but perhaps just get a casing for the G9 for the underwater stuff?

that was my sort of orginal plan but it all seems too much to go into the slr world me thinx! i'd love the wa lenses and macros etc but cost a lot more than i oringinally thoguht, I'd be happy to compare my photos with slrs one day perhaps?

I'm not sure the quality would be all that different, but for underwater shots the real advantage is going to be the instantaneous reaction of the shutter, so you actually capture the look of surprise in the eyes of the fish, rather than a little blur swimming off.

The shutter lag was one of the main things I was trying to get away from but its not as bad as other compacts.
I caught this fish by surprise as he usually blends into the background as he did from the second shot I took of him

I'd love to go SLR underwater but cost is the main issue, my current set up is about 2 grand, SLR would be about twice that eek

I was thinking tho just to use SLR for land use but I would just want to buy lens after lens after lens!
