Just wondering before i take the plunge and fork out for the 450d, is it likely to be replaced anytime soon?

Agreed - Think it's probably worth the extra for a 40D if it has a better viewfinder than the 450D. Find the cheap canon viewfinders really small and hard to get a decent idea of focus through.

I have the 450D and it is a great starting DSLR. There are rumours floating about on the internet of a "500D/Tsi" coming out in February and predicted specs but obviously nobody apart from Canon know if this is true so it depends what is important to you in the camera as to which you go for. Also if the 500D is released soon it will be at a premium for a while and with that extra money above the 450D it might be taking the step up to the 40D as mentioned.

I'm not actually worried about wanting it's replacement as i can't think of any features it could have that would make me want it more than the 450d . I'm just thinking that i would be mighty annoyed if i paid full price then in a month or so was able to buy it cheaper as it had been replaced.

Personally, I tried both the 40D and the 450D before going for the latter.

In the end, I went for the 450D not so much because of price - although it was nice to be able to get a Speedlite 580 EX2 flash for the difference between them - but because of the size.

I travel (or at least I did until last month) a lot on business, and it's nice to be able to put the camera, a gorillapod and my 28-75mm lens in my hand luggage. The 40D was, for me, both too big for that, and also just felt too big in use.

Both are excellent cameras, and with the 50D out now there's less of a price gap between them, but I would definitely suggest you physically try each one out for size before deciding.

Definitely!
I did, with the idea of going for the 450D on cost issues, and ended up deciding the 40D was for me.
I preferred the weighting and liked the fact it had some weather proofing.
A few weeks after I bought mine the 50D was released, but in all honesty I doubt I would have waited anyway. The deal I had on the 40D was pretty good anyway and it was a stretch for the 40D let alone the 50!
Have a play and see what you like. thumbup

've played around with the 450d and like how it felt, i don't want to spend any more than the 450d so deffinately wouldn't stretch to the 40d.

Another thing to bear in mind is that the quality of your lenses is, within reason, at least as important as the quality of the camera body, if not more so.

Decide what your budget is, then take a look at what you can get in terms of a new kit. Then start considering what you can get if you buy a body and lenses second hand.

Some places you might find useful.....

This place has thousands of user reviews all averaged out to give marks out of ten for camera bodies, lenses, flashes and more.

This one, meanwhile, will help you find the best price on whatever you decide to go for.

500d will have more megapixels, probably a better LCD, probably a movie mode.

The 450D is a great all rounder, the 40D isnt realy much heavier though and is much better for sports.

I picked the 350D over the 20D due to its smaller size, I dont think it would have made a great difference to me either way long term.

The 300/350/400/450 are on an approximately 18 month cycle. I would expect the 500 to be out in August. Given the existing economic state, it wouldn't surprise me if it were longer.

rumour has the '500d' to be annouced in jan or feb this year, given the rebate on the 450d has just finished i'd wait a short while and see. The 450d won't disappear but they may reinstate the rebate once the new model is annouced.

The price of the 450d has been creeping up lately, no doubt with demand.

I paid £550 with twin lens pack and 8gb card late dec. With £50 cashback

Now the deal is £570. Thats gone up tech £70 in the space of 3 weeks.

I think the reason for the price rise is:

BBC Finance said:
US Dollar £1=$1.40410
When I got mine it was £1=$2. At $1:40=£1 I would have had to pay £540 not £380!

Reason for the price rise is the GB£ vs Yen. £ has been slaughtered and all canon/nikon stuff has rocketed.

The 450D with the kit lens is now £529 at Warehouse Express. What a jip ! You can get a Sony A350 with 2 lenses for a tenner more. Why, if its the strong yen that's the cause, are Sony prices stable ?

It may have something to do with the fact that Warehouse Express have just about the highest price on the web for the 450D, and the lowest price for the Sony?

In comparison, Digital Camera Exchange have it for £450.

Another point to remember is that Canon were until recently running a £50 cashback promotion on the 450D which has now ended. That's marketing related, not currency fluctuations.

ETA - You could add on something akin to the Tamron 55-200mm Zoom for £75 or so, thus getting the same zoom range on the 450D as the Sony twin lens package for £15 less.

Given the huge range of prices on the web, you can spin the message any way you want to, but one benefit any Canon or Nikon will have over the Sony is that as far as I know, Sigma, Tamron and Tokina only produce lenses for Canon & Nikon, so your choice of lenses is vastly reduced on the Sony.

All prices I've used are from here --> http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk

Sigma covers the full range of current DSLR mounts, tamron covers canikon, pentax and sony. I wouldn't say that third party lens availability was a good reason to pass over the offerings from Sony.

On further looking, so they do! Do many shops stock them? I was largely working on what is usually on display in Jessops, LCE and the like.

Your much less likely to find a sony(alpha/minolta) etc mount 3rd party lens than a canon/nikon.

Saying that odds are whatever mount your camera is the cheap 3rd party lens on ebay will be for the other one...
