I am sure there are posts about lens and which on is best, but I have a standard 18-70mm lens and after a lens with more detail and larger zoom so can take better landscape photos with detail. I am not looking to buy nothing from ebay (dont like the site)

Any ideas on the size of the lens?

If by "larger zoom" you mean a greater range of focal lengths, then you can get lenses that cover a range like 18-200mm that might suit. I believe Sony make one and there are also alternatives made by Sigma and Tamron that are probably a bit cheaper. These lenses tend to cost in the range of £200 to £450. If you mean you want a longer focal length (i.e. telephoto) lens, then there are a myriad of lenses of 75-300mm length, of varying expense (£100 to £400) and quality, again made by Sony and others.

I'm not sure what you mean by "more detail". If it's to get closer in to a distant subject, the longer focal length of the lenses I mentioned will do it. If you actually want the lens to resolve more detail (i.e. be sharper), you either need prime lenses (ones that don't zoom) or the top-of-the-range zoom lenses, which can be very expensive.

I'd recommend the Sigma 70-300F4/5.6 APO lens (the one with the red ring on the barrel!) Its cheap enough but still very good quality...

Its an idea for added protection should you drop it or knock the lens on something. Having said that i dont usually bother because i have the lens hood attached most of the time anyway.

For the future, www.rgb-tech.co.uk are often very competitive on Minolta / Sony AF fit lenses so worth checking out before making a purchase, although in this case they are £5.50 more expensive.

I would have suggested trying to find a second hand Minolta 70-210 f4 aka "beercan" - see http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/detail.asp?IDLens=48 for details. dyxum.com has information and reviews on just about every lens that has been produced whether still in production or discontinued that fits the Minolta / Sony autofocus mount so is worth having in your bookmarks for the next time you want a lens.
