Hi everyone!

Just here to ask about a zoom lens. Im going travelling to Australia at the end of this year and was wondering what cheap (but still reasonable) zoom lenses were available to me. I only have a budget of about £200 (saving it for Oz) But would like a reasonable focal length. At the moment i only have a 50mm 1.8 & and 17-85. These are on a 40D. Any opinions would be great!

(Another reason im getting it is becuase i have just been given a ten percent voucher for ebay)

Many Thanks

Leighton

Assuming you want a telephoto lens, apparently this one is quite good:

If that's too expensive, you could try this non-stabilised one which weighs next to nothing...

If on a budget, try second hand from Jessops or something, my mate recently picked up a 55-200 for £35 or you could possibly find something like a sigma 135-400 fairly cheap?!

+1 for the Canon 55-250, I am very pleased with mine and you get a lot for the price. From what I have read it performs well (given the price) compared to more expensive lenses. It has got a good image stabiliser (4-stops, auto panning and tripod detection) and a decent focal length. Downsides are not the widest aperture and no USM, but what can you expect from a cheap lens?
I bought mine from Camerabox (cheaper than Warehouse Express): http://www.camerabox.co.uk/productDA1.asp?ProductN... which brings it within your budget.

I got a used 70-200 USM IS from London Camera Exchange for £235 recently and I'm really impressed with it. Image stabilisation is awesome and I don't think I could live without it now.

I took this today, handheld at full zoom at about 1/250th.

I'd seriously consider spending up to your budget and taking the best quality lens to Aussie, after all, you want the best quality photos to remember the trip by.

I'ev heard good stuff about the 55-250IS, but how long do you want the Zoom to be?
On my 40D my 28-135 offers a fairly nice compromise of relatively wide-angle and medium telephoto, bearing in mind on a cropped sensor it's equivalent to 216mm smile
