Looking at the quality of peoples photos on here I cant really compete...

But decided to build a new gallery website anyway whilst I was snowed in a few weeks back to display my growing collection of obscure photos...Bit of a web design challenge as well never hurt!

The website uses PHP to dynamically build the image lists and then Javascrpit to display them in a nice snazzy way...

It works best in Firefox3 but should work in Internet explorer as well...

Would appreciate comments and critique on the website :-)

Enjoy

First thing I noticed was when you click on Galleries it doesnt take you anywhere til you click a sub menu.

Might be worth adding another page with the different options? I dont design websites mind

I'm using IE7 and for some reason I couldn't see any of the photo galleries (Error on page), which is a shame because I was looking forward to seeing your pics of Cane Hill and West Park!

Its weird... it seems to work in IE7 for some people.... but not for others...

Works flawlessly in Firefox... which is annoying.... Ho-Hum... better get back to the bug hunting...

I've just upgraded to IE8 and it works now!

Great photos of Cane Hill and West park. Went back to Cane Hill a couple of months ago and the demolition work had already started and with too many workmen about, didn't get in. Such a shame to see it go but I'm glad I got to see the place beforehand. From there we went to St Ebbas (just down the road from West Park, and another one part of the Epsom Cluster), but it just didn't have the same character. Popped into West Park but after a brief spell at the mortuary we got caught wandering around the outside grounds. All-in-all it was a very disappointing day.

Works fine with Google Chrome.

Some incredible images in there thumbup

Edited to say I'm not keen on the way the thumbnails are reflected on themselves, but that's a minor niggle. And I don't know whether I'd have my full name on there when a degree of trespass has obviously been involved in getting the photos.

I too expect the main navigation to go somewhere. Also, you seem to have broken the reflections in mooflow..

Hmm.. a fair comment re the navigation...

How do you mean I broke the reflections?... I thought it looked pretty cool like that?

Great photos, but sorry to say the site is terrible. Personally I would just use Flickr. If you are dead set on a "bespoke" site I would go for something much more simple, no Javascript stuff, etc.

It's very difficult see where your photo ends and the reflection begins. If you look at a demo I did for Mr Carter, you'll see what I mean about the reflections.

The reflection thing seems fine to me; there's a very clear definition at the bottom of the photos. A couple of points are that the landscape link doesn't do anything (don't know if it's meant to) and that there is no graphic visible on the button that closes the expanded image window, you just have to guess that it's there.

Tegwin

I took some photos of RAF Binbrook recently and poseted them on a military thread http://www.pprune.org/military-aircrew/358073-binb...

I was given a link to a website where others are doing your kind of work (but less artistically). I don't know if you're aware of them. http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.p...

Might give you some ideas of new places to try out.

You can get a larger version by double-clicking - although the site does mention this, its not at all intuitive.

yes, you can double click on the thumbnails.... And no.. its not as intuitive as I hoped...

I can agree fully with the cirtisisms above... the site is overly complicated... it was partically done on purpose for the entertainment of creating it in the first place...

What would make a "great site" for displaying that sort of imagary effectivley do you think?

Simple, black background, no clever stuff, just a straightforward structure of themes / subjects / folders, no fuss.

I like this one which was shown recently:

www.tsr2photography.co.uk

Leighton's is also nice:

Lots more examples here:

Personally, I have given up on my own site and I just use Flickr, and pull a selection back into my site using a Flickr Widget.
