Canon G10. Your thoughts please...
Discussion
It appears that the G10 is not much different to the G9, but you can get the G9 for close to 200 quid new . . . I don't think the G10 is worth 150 quid more . . . the G10 has a slightly wider lens which may or may not be important to you . . .
I bought a G9 as a point and shoot that allows pretty much full control and in that respect I'm happy with it . . . noise is an issue of course, but noise is an issue with all point and shoot cameras so there is nothing much you can do about that . . .
The IS works well, it seems reasonably well made, takes nice sharp pictures and allows you to do more or less everything you can do with a SLR in something much more compact, macro works very well and it produces RAW files which IMHO is a benefit . . .

I got a G10 as a back up to 5D and a 1D MkII, and although it wasn't a bad camera I sold it fairly quickly for the following reasons:
1. It's still a compact and therefore useless at high ISO.
2. It's big enough that it doesn't fit in a pocket, so needs a strap / bag and if I have to carry it around my neck I might as well carry the 5D, (which to me is a small camera anyway as I've been using 1-series EOS cameras professionally for about 12 years now.)
3. As a result of 2 above I found I was never using it.
I got a little Lumix with a 5x wide angle lens instead (an FX-37) and love it. The quality is not as god as the G10, but it fits in my pocket and I take it everywhere, which is what I want a compact for.
In summary - if you're used to an SLR, don't forget that as good as the G10 is, it is still just a compact and so just as fundamentally flawed as they all are, but it lacks the convenience of a smaller camera to compensate. If you're used to compacts the G10 would be a pretty good step up from most others. (But it's almost as expensive as a DSLR, so think carefully...)

+1, but I have the TZ5. The G9 just doesn't fit in any of my pockets!CivicMan said:
