I was sooo sooo close to buying an LX3 today... but my flight was called just in time to save my wallet.

Anyone got one? I'm still partially torn between that and a G10? Any recommendations from current owners would be very appreciated.

On purely anecdotal evidence it seems the LX3 is better.

It's substantively the same camera as the Leica D-Lux4 which I have and I LOVE!!!

Very very close call betwixt the two - bottom line for me is that the LX3 slips easily into a jacket pocket and therefore would go everywhere with me... the G10 just too bulky for that so you may as well hang a DSLR over your shoulder.

Right, so thats pretty convincing so far... now I'm just kicking myself for not just biting the bullet and buying it when I had the chance - now I'll have to wait a few weeks for the next trip banghead

Hi,

I had a Canon G10 and I sold it and bought an LX3! The G10 is just too big for what it delivers, compared to the LX3 it just doesn't deliver pictures that are that much better to warrant the extra bulk.

The look of the LX3 and the wider lens also threw it for me too. Only things I would add, is it is simpler to navigate around the Canon menu and some of the small buttons on the Lumix can be a bit of a pain sometimes.

Another thought Pernod, the Panasonic TZ7 is due in the shops anyday. First reviews rate it VERY highly and it comes in around £275. I have one on order to replace my TZ5 which makes gorgeous images in it's own right. This is a TZ5 photo, and the TZ7 will be better!

Thanks Civic! Interesting reading the reviews and gave food for thought...

I think the wider aperture of the LX3 suits my stlye more than the zoom, but it's a tough call.

Ultimately I think the lack of RAW is the deal breaker though as I really want the compact to fit in with my daily workflow from the SLR smile

The other one that initially caught my eye was the Ricoh200... is it any smaller than the others? (I do a lot of travel).

careful - don't assume whatever current RAW workflow you have will work with the files from the new camera. Certainly RAW files from my Leica are a bd and I've left it in jpeg for now!

Hmmm... good point!

Time to find some sample Raw files online to check I think. Thanks dobbo.

I bought a G10 and found it very disappointing. Too many pixels, too much noise, too mushy after in-camera noise reduction IMHO. Swapped it for an LX3 and delighted with its results/handling thumbup

The two downsides of an LX3 for me are that the long end of the zoom is ONLY 60mm (35mm equiv.)
and the camera doesn't have any kind of OVF to supplement the screen when required.

It does, but it's bleedin' pricey.

TZ7 equivalent in 35mm terms is a 25-300mm. The stabiliser works pretty good too.

Thanks for the advise guys. Picked up the LX3 a few days ago and so far I am very very impressed. Zoom is definitely limiting but TBH that suits my shooting style anyway (but my wife will no doubt notice it more than I do).

The low light and indoor performance has been a real surprise for a point and shoot (having not had one for a few years!).

Good choice - I wish you well with it!
