Hello,

Just picked up a grip for the 40D and wondered where the best place to buy batteries was? It's the BP-511, and Jessops wanted £79 for the Canon one. eek

Anyhow, I'm not too fussy about being Canon branded, but any recommendations on where to buy/what's the best aftermarket ones, make would be superb!

Cheers,

Neil.

p.s. Did a search, and couldn't find much on here.

Thanks, I'm just not sure if any of these are good or not. I have been around various sites, looking at various aftermarket ones, and the last thing I want is for a dodgy battery to blow up (hence asking for non-canon-brand recommendations).

Almost a year ago I bought 2 x batteries for my 400D from 7dayshop. No problems at all. Give as many shots as the geniune Canon battery and charge up in about the same time. The 2 cost me £9.99 on a special offer then running.

Do you mean you want a battery made by Duracell or a company like that? If so, then I've never seen a camera battery that is branded by such a company; it's either the camera manufacturer or a 'no-name' one.

Sam, I'm really just looking for a decent battery that is not Canon. I've seen ones at a fiver each, but are these any good?

Just looking for something that isn't going to melt/blow up in my camera, that's all thumbup

I have an EN-EL4 replacement that I got from 7dayshop. It's absolutely fine. It was something like £17 vs £100 for a Nikon original.

I too haven't seen "Duracell" batteries or similar for DSLRs.

Canon advise that only Canon batteries are used because of the risk of non-Canon batteries damaging the camera. I have seen reports of this happening. On the other hand, I have read lots of people saying that they have used non-Canon batteries without problems. I have also used non-Canon batteries without problems (I think I paid about £4). I don't think you are going to find a definitive answer on exactly how risky non-Canon batteries are and I haven't seen any information about whether one type are more risky than another. Up to you whether it's worth the risk.

Thanks Sam, I'll give the unbranded a go. Use one already on my 350D, but just wanted to double check with others before getting this one.

Cheers,

Neil.

I've used 7dayshop sourced batteries in a variety of cameras and never had a problem. The 400D seems to keep going longer on the cheap substitutes than the original battery. No matter how much you pay or how much you use them the Li-On's seem to fade rapidly once they reach around 18 months of age. So low cost seems to make sense.

I've been using 7dayshop batteries in EOS 20D\400D\40D since 2004 in addition to the Canon originals (battery packs and 4 batteries per camera), never had a problem.

I've used one from MyMemory for the last few years as a straight swap (ie not only as a backup) in my 20D. No problems whatsoever.

We use Uniross replacements which we bought from MyMemory on 3 for 2 at £13.99 each - they've been fine.
