I'm going to China on Saturday for a month. its a fairly industrial non touristy part of China.

I was wondering if I should take out insurance as I stand out like a sore thumb when I'm over there and somebody might try to steal the camera.

The only thing is I find that insurance is not only expensive as its only for a month but it doesn't cover my camera equipment, they say things like two items of value upto £500. plus there is the added complication of the spiraling cost of kit

I have a small amount of beginners equipment. which is:

Nikon D60
Nikon 50mm 1.8
Nikon 18-105 VR
Sigma 70 - 300 APO

What is the best way to insure this equment while I am away?

Cheers Stuart

I was looking at insurance last month but then founds y house hold insurance would cover me, think I've got 4.5K cover out of the house including 60 days abroad for just ~£25 extra a year. Ok I have a £100 excess on a claim, but if I did have to claim one in two years then it'd still be cheaper than dedicated insurance with no excess (note I do NOT intend to get my gear replaced this way).

Note 1. this is as an amateur, not sure if I could get the same cover if I was a professional photographer.

Note 2. Embarrassingly I dropped my D70 a year or so ago and my insurers replaced it with out argument (for Jessops vouchers to the value of a D80 as that was the current equivalent).

+1 for adding it to your home insurance if you can. Much cheaper, though luckily never had to use it...

The exess on my home insurance is very high, so that isn't really a very pratical option say the kit isn't worth that much.

Camera gaurd sound like what I am looking for they quoted me £35 for £700 of kit for 1 year and 30 days abroad, So I think I wil go with them.

ammend your excess amount at the same time?

the good thing with house insurance is it doesnt name items, so this week it may be travel with a camera, next week may be a laptop etc
