It totally depends on which lens you are using it with. They usually work great on f2.8 lenses.

What teleconverter/lens combination are you considering?

well i have the kit 18-70mm lens that came with my Sony A200 and wouldn't mind a little bit more inbetween ness on distance as i have a 300mm lens that i aquired but sometimes is a bit much!!

A lot will only work with certain lenses, so best to check on that as well. I'm not familiar with Sony stuff really, but I'm guessing the lens you have is a fairly low end "kit" lens, and a converter won't work with it.

Sell the 300mm and get a 70-300mm?

On an 18-70? Forget it.

Yes they can work okay on pro lenses, you'll likely loose AF if the TC takes the max. apperture over the F5.6 mark. ie you need a fast lens that is at least F4 with a 1.4x TC or F2.8 with a 2x TC. Also you will loose some quality that maybe acceptable with high quality matched stuff, bit dodgy otherwise.

For what it's worth I've a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 and Tamron 1.4x and Kenro Pro300 2x TC's. It won't AF with either very well! Will probably ditch them both in favour of a Sigma 1.4x TC that should work with the lens.

Converters normally tend to be for the longer lenses, 200mm up wards.

The 1.4x is normally very good, but the 2x is normally fairly rubbish (That for both Nikon and Canon)

1.4x looses a stop
2.0x looses 2 stops.

So an F2.8 lens is turned into an f4 or f5.6 lens.

Remember Autofocus will likely switch itself off at over f5.6

And physicaly teleconvertors wont attach with most lens's.

There realy only usefull for fast longer primes and zooms.

I agree with the above. I use a 1.4x a lot, but a 2x rarely, and generally manually focus much of the time. I can get some good results with it, but I will take the 500mm lens if I need the reach.

As said, most of the time it's the expensive f2.8 lenses that benefit, which I don't think you've got!
