Not sure if this is more "holiday" related but, my Mum and sister are off to Singapore next week - My simple question is - "Is Singapore a good place to get lenses at all?" - if I tell them exactly what I want, is it cheaper to get a lens there?

Saying that - even if I tell them EXACTLY what to get, they'll probably still come back with the wrong thing....

Why not phone up some of shops in Sim Lim for example and ask the price..

My mate in Singapore used to go to Hong Kong for his stuff. Unless they were on special offer during one of the many tech shows throughout the year that are held in Singapore.

When I looked at this in Nov 08, yes, it was a bit cheaper, but not by much. You could get similar savings by buying direct from HK over internet, only difference was the airfair. However exchange rates are completely different now so who knows. There's a big electronics retailer in Singapore airport (lots of outlets but always the same shop). I did a google for singapore airport, then looked at the list of retailers, then went to thier website. For what it's worth at that time I reckoned you could save a similar amount by getting a £20 ryanair flight to ireland and back, and getting stuff tax-free in Dixons at the airport. That was on a D300 body though, when it was ca. £930 at Jessops mail order, adn you could get it for about £850 in dixons (and crutially it would be a UK camera with warranty). In the end I couldn't be bothered and got it from Jessops! It would have to be quite a saving to do two flights on ryanair in one day.

Hmm - I'll give it some thought I suppose - If I do - I'd be asking my Mum or sister to pick out the right lens for me.....

Probably best I not bother smile

James, I think Singapore used to be a bit more expensive than Hong Kong, and last month in Hong Kong lens prices were pretty much on par with the UK. Looked at a Nikor 85mm f1.8 for a mate of mine and there was £10 difference between HK and UK, plus only a 1 year international warranty. That might have been more to do with the shocking exchange rate though.

Bought a fair bit of kit out there, but the exchange isn't great at the moment.

As rhubarb says Hong Kong is a fair bit cheaper than Singapore and about the same as the UK. I'd leave it personally.
