Can anyone recommend how i can copy home video from my panasonic mini dv camera (has DV in/out) to my new macbook.

I have seen some video capture dongle type things on ebay for about £35 but do these cheap ones work? Also what type of software would i need or could the Mac take care of it all?

Normally a case of load up Imovie - plug the camera into Mac / USB or Firewire using the lead that's supplied with the camera and then switch the camera onto play.

Click import and bob's your uncle.

New unibody imacs did away with FW.

Pinnacle do a DV (3 pin(red, white, yellow) to USB capture device for £50.

... meeting in USA

Schmidt: "What's the best way to get stuff onto our new laptop?"

Geek: "Firewire"

Schmidt: "Great, lets do away with it and give them only a crappy USB2 and STILL Charge them a fortune"

Geek "Yes SIR"

Would this do the job as a cheaper alternative?

It has all the right bits, but I suspect it to be monumentally st.

Pinnacle is good. It is part of AVID, which has been used to edit pretty much everything professionally (along with Final Cut) for a very long time.

The Pinnacle kit does onboard processing, which should make a better image, and reduce the load on your mac. The cheaper thing almost certainly places the entire load on the Mac.

The product is "Pinnacle Video Capture for Mac"
£50 on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000WE7ZO...

If you get the cheaper one, you will almost certainly regret it, and its 1/2 the price of the proper answer.

Just to check, you are talking about an Alu body 13' Macbook.
