Bit of background - a few years ago I bought a basic Canon SLR and did a couple of college courses (bought film because at the time DSLR's were just starting to become affordable but the course was still very much geared towards film).

Kind of lost my way a bit with photography but really want to get back into it and think that digital is the way to go (I think that to really develop I need to be able to see my shots ASAP - had a habit of getting pics back from the developers, getting disappointed and not really analysing what had gone wrong).

I don't want to throw away all the Canon stuff but understand that whilst the couple of lens I have will be compatible with a new body, due to the different aspect ratio between film and the digital sensor, my current lens (28-90 mm and 75-300 mm) will have different zoom/wide angle levels that with a film camera.

My question is with those lens, can I manage buying a body only, would the standard lens that comes packaged with a body (which appears to be 18 mm - 55 mm) be of any benefit or should I go body only and buy a lens separately to 'fill a gap' in what I have already?

Also has Canon recently brought out a new range? I see on some web site that a 1000D and be had for significantly less than a 450D and assume this is because the 1000D is a previous generation camera.

Edited - just seen the thread below on 450D v 100d etc so will read that for last question!

1000D is a mishmash

Part 450D (live view etc)
Part 400D (sensor)
Part 350D (AF)

Some bits of its own. Its a decent camera.

Personally would go for 450 over 1000 also re kit lenses, The IS ones are supposed to be pretty good, the earlier non IS ones never had a very good reputation, but experience you usually end up wanting to upgrade so depending on which one comes with camera it might pay to body & upgrade lens. What would be ideal to go with the lenses you already have would be a canon 10-22 or the sigma 10-20.

Out of interest what is the SLR that you have? If its a recent one EOS and autofocus etc, then you'll be ok. But if you bought it for a course, then potentially it could be an older AE1 or something - in which case the lenses will not fit a modern digital.

It is a EOS 300V - smaller one is non USM, the other USM.

Will these be compatible?

Probably, if there canon EF mount then 99% chance they'll work.

Remember the crop change in FOV tho.
