Have an SLR for serious duties (when I can be arsed lugging it around), but my trusty old Ixus 40 is starting to get a bit tired (playing up every now and then).

Picture quality from the little Ixus is spot on, so am considering simply getting something like an Ixus 100IS.

Before I do, however, has anyone got any other suggestions?

Have noticed some a stretching the lens envelope to 4x in a similar sized body (Lumix I think?). Others look to have squeezed the packaging a bit more (Exilims). Are these as good as the Canon range in terms of image quality?

Will also be buying a new photo printer, probably Canon if that makes any difference (I always assumed the hassles with colour would go away if using a printer/camera from the same brand...and have Canon SLRs).

I'd certainly consider the Canon G10 in your situation

(note to simpo... 'ONLY' recommended - not Highly!)

Panasonic Lumix range is well regarded.

I don't know what hassles you have with colour, but my understanding is that having the printer set up to work with the paper you're using is more important than the make of printer. Also, if you're doing anything to the photos with the monitor, the monitor needs to be displaying colours accurately.

None really, and have the current printer set up so that output's reliable. I was just thinking that Canon to Canon will allow use of DirectPrint if necessary.

Canon G10's not really compact enough. If I were going to lug, I'd take my SLR (currently a 10D and 1dMkII. Considering a 5DmkII at some point).

I fancy the look of the Sigma DP2, anyone know anything about it?

I've had a Panasonic TZ7 for a couple of months and it's a cracker. Leica lens, 35mm equivalent of a 25-300 zoom, effective stabilisation, great shadow and highlight retention, HD video, and it goes in my shirt pocket.

The front image on my website was taken with it, and the first 3 photos in the Car images also. I love it. I considered the LX3 but the zoom is way too short.

Have a look at Sigma Talk on the Dpreview forum. Lots of talk and photos on the DP2.

hehe

Fuji EXR model might be worth a look as well - features a cunning way to get more dynamic range, or so it says.
