I have a Canon EOS 40D and have started taking some quite good photos and with a bit of assistance from Lightroom they're starting to look semi-pro and would like to purchase a photo printer (or printer that does photos) to quite a good quality, good enough for framing (A3 max size). What would you recommend?

I have been looking at the Epson STYLUS PHOTO 1400 or Canon Pixmas.

No responses so far, so thought I'd bump this one up as I am looing for advice on the same.

I've got an Epson stylus photo 900. It's a few years old now, and only A4, but it does produce some pretty good prints, so I'd assume you'd be OK with the Epson.

If you are not going to print a lot... I agree with the above. Photobox are so cheap these days (esp when they are doping 2 for 1)

What they said!

I do have a pretty good Epson at home but these days I only use it for rough prints, anything I want at really good quality gets ordered from Photobox.

Have a look here http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews/printers/Pigs/pag... which covers the 3 main contenders for A3.

I plumped for the Epson R2880 mainly because of its black & white ability together with the easy availability of profiles & users advice. The HP seems to have some reliability issues.

However if you're only occasionally going to print to A3 you'd be better off with an A4 & having your larger prints made elsewhere from a cost point of view. However its a bit like developing film to do your own prints - same frustrations & same highs
