Looking for a new SLR to take close up pics of product at work and mainly to use privately as family pics etc. Its not really to take up as a hobby .. just want good shots and needs to be relatively simple (idiot proof) to use. I appreciate your help.

Forgot to mention looking at around £500 but could be tempted to spend more

I assume you mean Digital SLR?

Stick to Nikon or Canon and you can't go far wrong. They both have really good cameras in that price range... also, if you ever want another lens, they have the largest / most respected range.

How close up is close up?

If you're after proper macro capability then you might need to revisit the budget somewhat.

close up .. around 20 - 25cm away.

I like the Nikon brand for no particular reason. Lenses are very expensive .. will I need two?

'Close-up' is not to do with distance but magnification. What size objects are you aiming to photograph?

(or of course if it's for a work-related subject you could do the decent thing and send it out to a suitably experienced tog with all the gear ready and waiting in-house smile )
