I am after a camera with a certain feature (time and date stamp burnt into the image). After a bit of browsing on the net I found its a dying feature so I thought I would go into soem shops to see if someone there knew.

I went to an independent shop, small pricey and knowledgable you would expect.

I explaiend what I wnated and immediatley the guy said, politley, 'sorry sir, i'll have to refuse the sale as I don't know enough about each individual camera'.

So there wasn't much else I could do apart from leave, lol

What do you think

Short and sweet because he knew he couldn't help me or couldn't be bothered.

Or a bit rude for not even having a look/try/using different words?

I wasn;t offended or annoyed but it was slightly odd, never heard the term of 'refusing the sale' before, they normally just say I dunno or can't help you.

What sort of retail outlet was this chap working from?

Was he an independant dealer?

If so, he's probably had his margin squeezed so much by etailers satisfying the seeming universal requirement for the best price at the cost of everything else that he doesnt have the luxury of being able to become fully conversant with his product line and thus provide you the service you desire.

See the bloke on the desk opposite you? Its his fault. Punch him.

Well as its a purchase for work it would have been bought from a 'real shop' - but probably not that one!

There were 2 memebrs of staff there, him behind the counter and another girl on the shopfloor. There were no other customers in the shop. IT WaS a rEally small shop - about the size of some living rooms on the shop floor!

I have been to that shop before and some other staff memebrs were quite helpful.

They were a small independant I think, but they did have Fuji branding on their shop sign so they may have more stores or be aprt of a larger chain.

Maybe the way you asked made you sound like you would be an awkward customer, and he didn't want to have to deal with a returned camera.

Why do you need this feature?

If you need proof of when a picture was taken then this feature is irrelevant without controling who is able to set the clock within the camera.

If you want it for some other reason, then all modern cameras create EXIF data embedded within the picture which includes the date/time taken. A bit of software on your computer could then easily burn this onto the image if required.

Sounds like he was tipped off that there would be a secret shopper sent from HQ.
Boss probably told him to deal with any strange questions directly from the training manual.

With the way retail is today, combined with net search power there is no excuse really for not doing some investigation on a customers behalf.
5 minutes digging around could net a decent sale.
