I'd like to get into automotive photography, following my commission at last years Classic Car Show at the NEC in Birmingham UK. One of the guys at work asked if I'd do some shots of his RX8 so I jumped in at the deep end and decided to have a go a rolling shots. Another mate tagged along with with MX5 too.

Please can I have your c&c on these shots please. Personally, I think they are OK, not brilliant but OK, IQ was a bit disappointing though for a 5D and 24-105. Probably the settings I was using.

Was you using a rig?

Colours on the rx8 look nice and vibrant.

Its a start, if I am being honest there are nothing special about the backdrop etc.

That's a bit harsh isn't it. It's only a photo.

Apologies to the cock wink. Provided he doesn't usually drive around like that, all is forgiven.

However, this could explain why so many cretins think it's "cool" (or "wicked, innit") to drive around with fogs blazing. It's the media, you see, creating this image that it's ok and you'll look like you've just driven straight out of a motoring magazine. nono

Not a bad effort, better than I could do. Were you using a polariser? There's quite a lot of reflection off the Mazda.

Which Mazda would that be? smile
I think you're referring to the RX8.

Shutter speed looks a bit high on #3.

Yep, used a polariser and yep, I used 1/100 instead of 1/60. I thought I was getting a big of shake in the chase car so up'd the speed a bit

Good results for a first attempt. I'd definitely recommend a more dramatic background, though, in order to emphasise the sense of motion. Also, try a slightly slower shutter speed next time. Nice, sharp shots though.

Might be a good idea if you could post your camera settings, car speed & weather conditions.

Actually that's how most of us professionals do it.
None of my work is achieved by using a rig.
IMO rig shots have been done to death and in practice are a real faff to set up for a result that usually looks photoshopped.

Lovely saturation BTW, what shutterspeed were you running?
Keep up the good work.

edit, actually just followed the thread. I use 1/30th and below depending on how bumpy the road is.

its nice to see some proper car to car photography , too much reliance on rig shots imo
