Gadget lust has taken hold.

Dealer has agreed a p/x price against a 10D and 1DmkII (both in the classifieds here temporarily).

Worth doing? Any owners with experience of the 5DmkII?

I've done a lot of reading regarding the 5d MKII and it comes down to what you want to shoot, and whether video is useful or not.

The way I see it is

Pros: Image quality, great noise control, full HD video
Cons: Not pro build quality, AF is fairly basic, Nikons feel better in the hand (subjective)

From what I've read your 1d MKII will have better AF, worse noise at high iso but for the rest of the time not be too far off the mark.

Oh, and the rumours are the 7d / 60d is due to be announced next week and possibly a 1d MKIIII so it might be worth sitting on any cash until we know what Canon are doing. That's what I'm waiting for anyway smile

PS I can't see your body in the classifieds

The next are being announced already??
Wow, that is a lot quicker than I expected! Oh well, I'm more than happy with my 40D! smile

The camera timelines seem to be a major release a year, which I agree is super fast. Canon need to react to the d700, so whatever they're going to announce next week better be good. I'm hoping for aps-h sensor with 1d AF system, 15mp, no video and pro weather sealing. Mmmmm.

From what I've heard through the rumour grapevine, Canon were surprised at the success of the video feature on the 5DMK2 and have draughted in more bods from the video division to make it even better. This WON'T detract from the still image capture quality of the 60D or 7D or whatever it will be called. Canon have got to release something pretty special if they want to classed in the same league as Nikon at the moment.

The addition of video to a digital SLR is a natural progression and I for one am looking forward to seeing what can be done. Just take a look at what Vincent Laforet has achieved with a 5DMK2.

Just my 2p's worth

While I agree regarding the video being a relative success, the core market is still PHOTOgraphers and unless Canon do something to match the D700 in terms of construction and auto focus they're going to lose a fair bit more market share. You can't take a 5d MKII on safari with you, but you could a D700 and arguably a D300. Nor would you want to take the 5D with you if the low light autofocus issues are anything to be believed. The 1D is the only option.

You could take a 300D on safari if you wanted to and get some perfectly good photos. I wish people wouldn't obsess about gear all the time and get out and take more photos.

I agree on the 300d being a perfectly fine camera but I'm not talking quality issues with the camera, I'm talking about build quality. There's no dust sealing / weather protection on the 5d.

Perhaps the correct way of saying it would you "you wouldn't want to take the 5d out on safari" through fear of damage, were as the 1d / d3 / d700 are all built like tanks.

Edited to add: In the safari example you'd be better off with a 40d than a 5d, as everything I've read says the autofocus is better and wouldn't want to miss a moment as the camera hunted smile This new canon better have the pro AF. There's a reason they didn't put it in the 5d, there'd be no reason to buy a 1ds!

I agree jon. Obvioulsy only rumours at this stage (and we know how danderous they can be) but I'm sure that Canon are aware of what needs to be done to keep their users happy and I'm hoping that we are going to pleasantly surprised with what they have to offer. I think for a lot of people this is going to be Canon's last chance to get it right before jumping ship. There has to be better autofocus, better low light capture and better weather sealing.

On a slightly different note, a very good friend of mine is the marketing director of a well know Japanese company who sell cameras, and after a recent trip to Japan, was telling me about how the Japanese are spending a serious amount of money developing sensors that will capture images well over 100mb, the idea being that you will only need one lens and you will be able to zoom into the image in post production to get your desired 'final shot'. I argued with him that this is not what photography is about, his reply being "no, but it is what photography is going to become". Other features will include continuous capture so you never miss a shot.

I've had my 5D out in the rain, in dust bowls, hanging off cars on clamps at 50mph, on a tripod in a loch, in the snow, covered in mud, resting in puddles, hauled all over the world. 50,000 shots in it works like new. I'd say the build quality is just fine, definatley fit for purpose as a pro camera. I have a MkI not MkII so can't comment on the autofocus issues but imagine if it was that bad they would have had alot returned rather than being out of stock for most of the year that it has been out. A friend of mine Dave McBride is an equipment quality perfectionist and seems very happy with his MkII.

Luminous landscapes had a whole bunch of 5d mk2s on a trip to Antarctic, 26 in total. I realise these are extreme conditions but 25% of them failed one way or another. On the same trip there were a bunch of D700s and not a single one failed.

that concept fills me with dread!

surely though theres a limit to the optical quality of a lens? Plus, theres only so big you can make a sensor. A 100 megapixel sensor, at 35mm size, would have horrific noise issues- the ccd wouldnt be sensative enough. - the amount of light normally used to resolve 10 megapixels, would have to be spread even thinner, into 1000 megapixels. Resulting images would be dark, and thus need horrific amounts of grain

Ye cannot break the laws of physics captain!

I can see huge sensors like that working for consumers, but i can always see pro's needing real cameras and real lenses. You just cant make one lens that can do everything, at least to a high standard. there always has to be a compromise somewhere

I have had a 5D Mk2 for about 2 months now. I am relatively new to digital so I haven't used a lot of the specific digital functions yet (histograms and so forth).

I don't have Canon lenses and have had some problems with compatibility meaning autofocus hasn't been locking on one or two of my good quality Tokinas. However, I recently tried a mid-range Canon lens and the autofocus was at least as good as the 1n (film) I used to use, although I only used it in the shop.

The video quality is very good, but the real pain is having to manually focus while filming. You can only use Live View with the rear LCD screen, which means it is more difficult to get accurate focus compared to using the viewfinder. The microphone picks up a lot of handling noises, but I think that would be a problem with any microphone built into the camera.

I can't fault the image quality and noise handling, even at high ISO. I've tried some long exposures of the Perseid meteor shower and the noise is much, much less than I would have seen using film.

Mirror lockup isn't quite as annoying as I thought it would be judging by what I'd read. It's a custom function and then you press the shutter once to lock up the mirror, a second time to shoot. Let's face it, most of the time that you're using mirror lockup you're taking more than one picture using it.

I find the handling very nice and everything falls to hand. I've always liked the Canon layout. I'm perturbed by the reports of poor weather sealing as my 1n was built like a tank and I had it out in all weathers. This one feels solid but I haven't been in the rain yet.

If there's any specific questions, fire away. smile

For a good range of what is possible... simply stunning.

5d mk2 is being selected by a lot of pros in place of the Red basic system; it's selling well, hurting sales of the 1ds...

I heard on good authority that there is a Canon event soon for a major launch, though of what, I don't know.

The most cited rumours are 7d or a 60d next week, then a 1d MK4 at the start of next month.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I can't see the ads either. Which is odd (definitely posted them). Will try again.

Think I may hold off a week or two. Unlikely to be able to get to the shop anyway now as have things to sort at home.

PS If anyone's after a 10D or 1DmkII, drop me a PM.

Just done some digging on these.

The 1dMkIV will be more than I'm prepared to spend these days I suspect. The MkII is an excellent, beast of a camera. But it's a steep learning curve IME. And a big old lump to handle. Can't imagine the IV being less than 3k in this country...

The 7D/60D I'm not sure on. Rumours are all over the place. If the focussing system from the 1 series is carried over, plus the high FPS rate then they'll (assuming there will be two models) be worth looking at. Can't think why Canon would do that though as it would surely kick sales of the 1 series into touch...

Still, didn't get chance to venture out today, so will see what next week brings. Something melding the 10D and 1D best bits would suit me down to the ground, so hopefully that's what'll happen smile

My current hope is the 1d MK4 will bring down the price of the 1d mk3 to something i can afford. I can't see myself needing much more camera than that! Why do you think the 1d is a steep learning curve?

I agree with your thoughts on the 7d/60d but they need some sort of answer to the d700 (which is hurting sales of the d3)

I think owning the 1dMkII brought home to me that I'm very much more "consumer" than "pro" smile

Several observations about the 1 series...previously I had a D30 and then a 10D (which I still have) before getting the 1dMkII.

1) It's MUCH bigger. To the point where I found myself leaving it at home more often than not.
2) Add to this that it has no onboard flash. So you carry a Speedlite with it. Making it bigger again, and adding something else to get to grips with.
3) The handling of it is very different to the "lesser" cameras in the range. And nowhere near as intuitive IMO. Switching between them is a pain.

It's a brilliant camera in terms of its ability to churn out nice images. Build quality is extremely good. The focussing system is immense and the high frame rate makes you laugh out loud. Both let you reliably get shots that would be difficult with one of the "lesser" cameras IME (have put two unmolested ones up which I quite like).

I guess I'm really just lazy. But something with a similar control layout to the 10D, in a similar sized body, but with the image, focussing and frame rate abilities of the 1 series would be a bit of a holy grail...
