DV for incar filming

I'm quite into my stills photography but I would like to start playing with DV as well.

I have an old Hi8 camcorder that has never really seen any use, as I've yet to discover a quick and easy way to digitise the film onto my Mac.

I'd also like to play around with lipstick cams etc, we used to have these attached to our race cars when Sky Sports were filming us.

The necessity is an analogue in as well as digital. I have found this: http://products.sony.co.uk/productdetail.asp?id=__603&search=GV%2DD800 but tbh it's more than i wanted to spend, does anyone have any other recomendations to put forward.

I'd love Digital8 as I can still view the tapes i already have if I sell my analogue cam, but is it only sony that uses this technology?

Don't know how this fits your budget, but for a few hundred quid you can buy a cheapo DV camera with DV in, the bullet cam, LANC controller and so on all plug straight in and you can upload to PC via firewire.

That sounds like the kind of thing I'm after, any idea on which camera I should be looking at, or would it be best to go buy What Video (if there is such a mag)?

Any website for lipstic cameras etc?

I think these are same people as rfconcepts. You'll need their lipstick camera with all the gubbins (they supply) plus a DV camera WITH VIDEO IN capabilitiy (not same as DV in). I use a little sony pc8, around £500 these days, which does very nicely. And a load of gaffer tape, as ever !

The only thing they're kit suffers from is the flimsy (IMO) battery pack. I keep meaning to get a replacement 12V rechareable from Maplin but always forget

you need 'AV in' on your video camera to use a bullet camera, helped sort a relation who brought a Sony TRV22 today for £450 it has the standard DV in/out and AV in/out port as well, RF concepts will be supplying the bullet

keep your old camera to view your Hi8 tapes, you wouldnt get much for it nowadays

Hi, i'm new to digital camcorders - Bought a Canon DV630i couple of months ago.

Bullet cameras are new to me, do these allow the camcorder to remain inside the car, leaving just the bullet cam outside? If so, will mine work?

Yep... The one above ( www.stevecarter.com/donymanners.WMV ) was taken with the camera in the footwell and the bullet gaffa taped to the rollbar.

You must have AV in on your camera to work though (I don't know your camera, so can't advise). www.rfconcepts.co.uk will sell you the bullet cam (hi res Sony colour = £125). All the info you need is on their site.
