Canon EF Zoom lens - work on digital camera ?
Discussion
Option 1; if you want to dabble without breaking the bank then consider a used Canon 10D/20D or 30D for between £199 and £369 from a good dealer...
All great cameras, and ignore the fact that they have less megapixels than new cameras - far more toys to play with (30D is an excellent model...) and 6-8megapixels are fine for up to A3 prints

House brick... better built, more to hold, and more functions, eg spot metering...

Better built? I've taken 7,000 shots in all sorts of different situations so far on my 450D without the slightest suggestion that the build quality isn't up to the job. What sort of shooting did you have in mind for which it isn't up to the job?
More to hold? There certainly is that! 50% more volume and 55% more weight if you're comparing the 450D with the 40D. This alone was enough to put the 40D out of the running for me. Have you tried getting the hulking great thing into carry-on luggage?
More functions? Possibly, but spot metering isn't one of them!
The only area I can really see where the 40D has a clear edge over the 450D is in fps and buffer size, and it hasn't been much of an issue in the sort of photography I like to date.plg101 said:

Or a 350/400/450D if you don't want to lug around a house brick!

If you have big hands, a larger camera is easier to hold. Personally my hands got cramp with a 400/450, but I know that doesn't effect everyone.
Anyway, my point was just that for £x amount, the OP should consider any used camera of a previous model generation to get best value and ignore the race for megapixels... Nothing more.
Stock question - What kit should I get?
Stock answer - What do you want to do with it?
Yes keep the lens as it will work with and Canon DSLR. With regard to which body the what do you want to shoot?
If you have big hands then the xxD bodies do fit better - I could not get a proper hold of a 450D even with a battery pack on it. Get in to a camera shop and have a try of the 450D and 50D bodies and see how they feel. The body size has changed very little back to the older models.
Don't get too hung up over the body andyway - This is the replaceable / disposable part of the setup - Just makesure that you get the best glass you can afford as this is the limiting factor on image quality. Even the entry level cameras will find the distortion in the cheep lenses on offer.
