It depends if you want a genuine UK lens or are happy with a Grey import. (With the resulting lack of proper warranty.)
I didn't think it made any difference with lenses?

But assuming its not a grey import, as said Sigma give you a 3 yr guarantee anyway!
A few years ago, and not wishing to shell out crazy money for a Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8, I bought a Sigma 20-40mm from Warehouse Express. It was as myopic as Mr Magoo, being up to an inch out of focus at a range of just two feet. So I sent it back and they sent me another one. That was equally myopic - quite unusable at anything less than 10 feet range. So I sent it back and got a refund (and later bought the lens I should have got to start with!)
Try that with 'reallycheaplenseswerereallycheaphonest.com' and see how far you get!

I have been looking at getting a sigma lens, and was about to get one from Hong Kong until I looked at this! Now done some more searching and best UK price is from www.purleygadgets.co.uk which wouldnt be my first place to look, but its cheapest and claim they give a free 5 year guarantee on all lenses.. no experience of this site or the guarantee but would like to know if anyone else has any experience.

I seem to recall reading on this forum or another one that that company is a bit dodgy and that people had bad experiences buying from them. Sorry I can't be more specific and apologies if that wasn't the company I was reading about but it may be worth investigating them a bit more before buying. But assuming its not a grey import, as said Sigma give you a 3 yr guarantee anyway!
I have bought various things (flashes and other bits) from purelygadgets with no problems.
The situation with Sigma warranties isn't quite as clear cut as that. Sigma lenses carry a worldwide warranty, it's there in the box. In order for this warranty to be valid you have to have purchased the lens from an accredited/registered/official Sigma "agent". Whatever this means.
As long as you do you are covered, but there is bound to be an element of risk involved if they decide to play silly buggers... Personally for the £500 saving on the lens I'm after, I'll take the chance, since £500 goes a long way toward fixing anything not covered by an absent warranty!

Yes you do get a 1 year warranty regardless, but the EX lenses come with a 3 year warranty from Sigma UK if you buy them through official channels. The situation with Sigma warranties isn't quite as clear cut as that. Since prices went up it seems that uk official lenses are often cheaper than ebay imports anyway.
The one I'm after is $1000 in the US and £1000 in the UK. Got to love rip off britain. I could fly to NYC and buy it for less than the price in the UK, with the added benefit that I'd be doing my bit for climate change.
Actually I wrote that as a joke but it's looking like a pretty good idea.... Off to check expedia!

Well, US $1000 is roughly £620, so you need to get a flight and some accommodation for less than £380 to make it worth your while
Unless you can find some kind soul on PH who lives in the states and can buy it and send it over. Not sure how that would work though from a customs point of view.
