Wouldn't mind knowing what you all think. First person to guess the lighting setup gets £20! biggrin

They are very red'ish, you might want to get your screen balanced.

Where abouts can you see the pixelation?

I'm currently viewing them on a Mac laptop and the screens usually spot on -

This one for example

If you look at the backgrounds you can see off shades of white. If I tilt the screen away from me - you'll see the 'white backgrounds' isnt. I'm guessing it's the left overs of shadows which you haven't quite got rid off.

Same for all the images. Anyone else see it ?

Yup, especially in the backgound of No 5, 6 & 7, also blown highlights on the models nose in all three of those photos. I like 3, well composed and lit and 4 but it could do with a bit more contrast in the facial skin tones.

Good start, keep at it.

I'm on a Mac and it seems like something isn't quite right. Their skin looks like those pictures that show skin condition after 20 years of sun bathing. Almost very freckly??

I'm on a PC and can see the same thing, it's almost as if it's lost some colour information in compression.

leighton - it's always a good idea to clone out the lighting from the eyes....unless of course a ring flash is used.

I'll guess desk lamp(s) or similar and hence the slighlty unusual skin effects but personally I think that provides and interesting style as does the skin texture. Preferable to the blurred pink blob concept that seems to be popular especially in the USA.

The concepts for the set up, the poses and the crops seem fine to me from a creative point of view. Probably would not win any prizes at the local camera club but that is to be expected for something different and in an area where you have not too much experience so far.

I take it the background was some sort of sheet or paper that is slightly creased - hence the subtle shading if one looks hard.

They look OK on my notebook running Vista/IE and not very good screen.

The (now aging) WUXGA screen on my older notebook (XP/IE) kicks up the highlights a little and looks a little less smooth but not objectionable.

Colour managed in Firefox on my old Sony 15" screen at 1024 they look very orange as soon as one moves slightly from the optimum viewing angle and the skin texture effect stands out a tad more but nothing objectionable.

Good first attempt I would say. In fact an excellent first attempt - no matter what your lighting set up was.

Who decided on the styling for the models?

Are we judging lighting, colour calibration or processing? The OP was concerned with lighting; the rest can be fixed.

I think he's probably more concerned that people don't work out the lighting and he saves £20!

My lighting guess - a row of led nightlights, 2 medium torches and a scented candle ...

Simpo, his first words were "Wouldn't mind knowing what you all think" then asked us to guess the lighting set-up, so some of us replied to the first part. I for one do not have the knowledge that you and other experts such as LongQ obviously have, so I am out of the running for the £20! wink

As for LongQ's comments, on my 22" LCD monitor there is a definite pixellation on the three mentioned photos, which also shows a pink tinge in those areas

HTH Leighton?

After studying the close up of the girls eyes I'd say that the main lighting was a dedicated flash with one of those 'Lightsphere' diffusers attached..........along with a window & a few roof lights (also windows).

Re; £20 - Leighton you can PM me for my postal address, cheques accepted thumbup

In these - the offshades of white are giving what looks like a Sega effect to the image in the background - large boxy groups of pixels of one shade, then more of a lesser shade etc. Perhaps it's just my screen

Fair point. In fact while I take portraits if asked, I don't consider myself an expert so haven't commented on the other aspects. There is no 'right' way to take a portrait - styles are infinite. The colour is definitely rather salmon though.

Where's the OP?
