A rare posting in this forum for me. After some advice from you learned folk smile

After a holiday in the Algarve where we went dolphin watching, our trusty but old compact digital took some fine photos of dolphin tails and some dark photos on the beach at night that I think are our kids.

So, now is the time to step up from the compact. We (well Mrs FUBAR mainly) are not great photographers, but it would be nice to take some moving shots, and some photos at night. So Im looking at a camera between the compact and the DSLR (advanced compact?)

Want something for days out with the kids, or the odd day out with moving targets, so decent but not too bulky or difficult to use. Budget up to £200 (although can push that a little is an absolute must)

Not knowing what Im looking for (and not even adverse to a refurbished camera off eBay if its a bargain), Ive plucked a camera off the internet, for point of reference/give you an idea what Im gibbering about.

FUJIFILM-S1500
http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/535001/FU...

Seems to cover the bases (including 'continuous shooting mode')

Or even the Nikon L100

Any other suggestions?

TIA smile

No particular knowledge of compacts but the Lumix range always seems to be highly recommended on here.

And seeing as its Mrs FUBAR's birthday present and a peace offering for going to Spa for a trackday over her birthday, I suppose the extra £s would be worth it hehe

Nick, I've just purchased a Canon 500D - love it to bits, and learning photography seriously now. although like the cerbs, photography can hurt your wallet. I almost fell over on the prices of lenses.

all the best mate

Good call Deano. The difference that my Canon SLR had over my previous camera was continuous focusing which makes all the difference when you're trying to track a subject and get nice crisp shots of it (say a car on a race track). Do any of the models you're looking at have this Fubes?

Fair enough don't worry about it then. My recommendation is to get something which works well in low light levels rather than having a bazillion pixels (anything >6M is plenty for an A4 print). You'll encounter low light a lot more than you think. A decent optical zoom is a good thing too. I could say more but I think it will only serve to confuse biggrin - check out www.dpreview.com for camera reviews and see what they have to say.

Having just spent all of Saturday at a wedding with my BiL's Canon DSLR, where I have to say I was quite impressed with some of the shots I took (especially after the pro photographer took me through all that ISO mumbo jumbo and I could take photos indoors without the flash) Im even more undecided.

The problem with the 'Extra Zoom' Compacts that Ive stumbled across, is that they all seem to run off AA batteries. Having had this before, its a right ballache so it needs to be a Li-ion type battery I think?

And as much fun as I had with the DSLR, my arm ached afterwards and was a kurfuffle carrying a case all over the place. It was great fun (for a day) but I dont think I would do a DSLR the justice it deserves

So now Im thinking, with my talents etc, the Compact Exra zoom is defo out, so maybe a good compact zoom is the way to go? Something like this? http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/Dig...

Suggestions, as always, gratefully received smile

Sorry to bore you all

After your wedding experience should consider a four-thirds camera, they're like DSLR's only smaller. you maybe need to find a few extra ££'s or buy 2nd hand though.
