I know it's a bit 'rude' to go into a shop and waste the salesperson's time by trying out products you have no intention of buying from them, but there is only so much premium I'm prepared to pay for 'service' if I can get an identical product for a lot less money elsewhere.
Great for politeness and service, and many people would rather have that than a few £ off the price.
However under the skin they are all about money - I paid top price for a s/h lens, and when a few months later I no longer needed it, it was of course worth peanuts with the explanation 'well there is a recession you know...'
But it was a very polite explanation in a very posh voice.

I bought a second hand lens from them, some time after their warranty period it died, bits rattling inside, I happened to be going to London the next week, took it in as I was in the area, they gave me another identical lens in replacement there and then, no questions asked, 'sorry for that - new warranty starts today' . . .
The lens cost a few bucks more than the best ebay price I could find at the time
As has been said, their service is very good . . . I've never had any issue dealing with them either on the phone or in person . . .

If you are looking at the more 'high end' stuff I would say it is well worth finding a shop you are happy with.
Greys has been a funny one in my experience, great if you sound slightly pucker, not so interested if you don't. The range only extends to Nikon, nothing more.
Calumet can be good depending on the store, the Soho one is a bit small and the staff couldn't care less. The other one in London is much better, as is the Bristol shop. My local shop is great, the chaps know me in there, get discounts and special offers but most importantly good solid advice. Will be taking a test drive of a H3DII in a week or two...

Could you define 'pucker' in the context of your post and Grays? Ta.Greys has been a funny one in my experience, great if you sound slightly pucker, not so interested if you don't. The range only extends to Nikon, nothing more.

Ta for that
Had similar experience when trying to by cars - No matter how much I earn, I still look unemployed. Funnily enough Aston and Porsche took me seriously... but I was almost invisble in a Ford garage buying a car for my mum (with cash in my pocket).
ETA - Richest man I know (and I know qute a few due to my job), worth £60 billion+ was ignored in a showroom trying to buy a mini - he IS a scruffy bugger, but you'd think retailers would have worked out by now that rich people don't always dress up!

Loved their shop but found their service extremely poor. I went in wanting to look at half a dozen 80-200mm AF-S lenses, which were worth a pretty penny. Got fobbed off with a new salesperson who knew nothing about their kit. One of the lenses had what could only be described as a bundle of pubic hair stuck to the glass (i kid you not!). And when i finally wished to try a lens on my body the sales person said fine, gestured to a glass work top to change lenses. I began to use it and an older staff member hurried over to complain at me for placing my equipment directly on the glass, then fumbled around in a drawer to pull out a mat with the attitude that i should have known they were there. I won't use them again and they've lost two grands worth of business from me so far in just the last year or so. The expectation was high and they very badly fell short.

Indeed, if I was that wealthy (I can but dream
) I would probably go out of my way to try and remain anonymous if at all possible.Nick M said:

Interesting, I have a race suit, a boiler suit and my birthday suit, I am a scruffy fecker, but never had an issue, I think it depends on your attitude . . .Had similar experience when trying to by cars - No matter how much I earn, I still look unemployed. Have also had the issue described with car dealers, one wouldn't speak to me at all so I bought a different marque (which was always an option) with cash then parked it outside the first ones showroom door when on the way to their parts department . . . mentioned to the sales droid that his bonus was at the other dealer . . . have that car to this day and never regret that decision (in fact it was a much better decision in so may ways) . . .
Anyway . . .
