Hey,

Looking for some advice on which digital SLR to purchase. I currently own and Fujifilm S9600 Bridge Camera and a Casio Exilim EX-Z850 both good all round camera's but its time for a upgrade in view of me constructing my own site to host my pictures so I am wanting a camera that is going to give me semi-professional results.
The two Digital SLRs that I am looking at are the Canon EOS 500d and the Nikon D5000. I have experienced them both, read all the reviews and all the brochures but still can't decide between the two I suppose what I really need is some feedback on the two models from people who have used them or even feedback on the brands themselves and previous experience with models from their ranges.
The type of photo's I shoot are usually involve car / landscape's + action car shots e.g rolling shots and track action. Also shooting at night is a task that I undertake quite often so feedback* on the performance of the sensors used within the cameras in low light levels would be much appreciated.

  • (be it from these models or previous/other models within Canons/Nikon's ranges)
Thank you for your time

Lew

Don't rule out a used 40D or 50D as well - both have spot metering - v useful for your type of shooting?

Personally I'm all Canon, from early Ixus and 35mm SLRs to current 40D with 50mm F1.8, 17-85 F2.8, 70-200 F4 and 300 F4 IS.

Both brands are great. Both have a loyal following. Both have good aftersales support and wide range of lenses and advice on usage. Neither brand are better than the other. If you are committed to a photo system then it's probably a very hard choice in the current market place.

One option: find a good dealer that does rentals and hire both for a weekend with a basic lens on - and then decide?

So do the other two.

I've not used either, but I suspect there isn't much between them in terms of outright performance. The market is very competitive with new models coming out frequently and Canon and Nikon are the market leaders. I'm sure both will be fine for what you want to do. The biggest difference will probably be in the layout of the buttons and menus, so if you can try them out in a shop I'd recommend that.

ETA: one thing that would put me off the Nikon is that it doesn't autofocus with some of the older and more specialised lenses.

When I got my camera, I came down to the choice of a Canon 450D pretty quickly, and I've been very happy with it since.

If I was in the same position today, I think I'd put up with the additional bulk of the 50D and buy that instead, as I have absolutely no use for the video recording function in the 500D, so would constantly resent having paid for it.

You guys are right in saying that there aren't many differences between equivalent models within each range. Interesting though I did notice that one of the major differences is that the Canon has a high resolution 3" tft screen and the Nikon 2.7" variable-angle tft screen with around about 500,000 pixels less than the Canon. What is everyone's thoughts on that front i.e does the high res screen outweigh the versatility of variable angle screen or the opposite ???

Personally I'd rather have the bigger screen. Again, if you can try them out before you buy, you can decide for yourself.

ah, sorry, i'm out of date! I was thinking of the 400d - the 450 and 500 both have spot metering, though the 1000 doesn't....

You can easily hack spot metering into the 400d along with iso 50 - 3200 smile

Thanks for that Jon, I think I will struggle with most of that though (hex editors etc).

Thanks again Jon - I managed to have a read through the thread yesterday before POTN went down for a server upgrade and I was able to install the hack onto my memory card without any issues.
