After the help I received on here recently I jumped in at the deepend and bought a D700 today with 8gb extreme card, an 14-24 f2.8 and a 24-70 f2.8 and the battery grip to get the 8 fps.

Only had a chance to play with it indoors in dim light......1st impressions ..... it is a well built beast weighty with it, even heavier with the battery grip on. It's also so well balanced and very easy to hold steady and OMG does it produce some crisp sharp images in a low light environment even with the iso as low as 250.....I am completely blown away by the quality. I was a bit daunted about moving from Canon as I am so comfortable with it's operating system, but the Nikon is soooo much easier and faster to use.

Can't wait for daylight .........

Just messing around in the house this evening and with only two soft light table lamps on I had crisp images at iso 200 .......was curious about how much light I could shoot in and still get a result so I switched off both lamps and was in near darkness......upped the iso to 600 and shutter down to 1/30 at 20mm and had a clear image with a bit of noise but an acceptable result .....with only one light on and iso at 250 the image was almost perfect......very impressive.

I may be missing something here but isn't the big point of the D700 its ability to get good results at *high* ISO, eg 1600+ ?

Yes it is........but tonight in near darkness I had very acceptable results at 600 not having to go anywhere near 1600.....so in normal low light situations with the ability to keep the iso lower will provide near perfect results.

Hey Taffy, how’s the kids mate, must be growing up fairly fast now? You still in contact with Greg (sp) and the others from Porschaforum?

Sorry for the OT guys!

Hm, either your perception of near darkness is different from mine or you had auto-iso on... I have had a D700 for almost a year and it's fantastic, but ISO 600 and 1/30 at 2.8 will not get me decent results in near-darkness... Good quality at that ISO-level was also easily attainable with my D200, the difference between a D200, D300 or D700 with those parameters would not be very big (forgetting DOF for a moment).

Anyway, have fun, it's a great camera and I still discover new possibilities after a year of ownership.

I'll check again as in my excited state there is a strong chance that I could be mistaken .....with no lights on it was dark save for a street light and the pictures it was producing just astounded me coming from an EOS 400D ....

I'd also be surprised at being able to use those settings at ISO600.

And bearing in mind the giant leap from the EOS you had, I would expect you'd have been gutted had you not seen massive results (the camera's 10x the price nearly!)...the 1D range, for example, would have shown something of a leap. As would, in all probability, a 5D/7D etc...

If you can get solid results, I may have made a mistake sticking with Canon smile Post up some pics - a new toy's always worth some posts!!

Tried again tonight and I'm afraid you were correct ...the auto iso was on ......I didn't realise as I set the required parameters and the auto iso corrected it without me realising .....
