I've done a fair bit of googling on this and tried a few extended EXIF readers and got conflicting advice but can't seem to get the number of actuations that my 5D has taken. Anyone know the trick or does it have to be done by Canon?

I'm starting to wonder how long it will last as I've had it 3 years and recon I click about 30,000 shots a year but I may be way out.

Nick, on the Nikon, I can pick it up on the metadata on flickr, 'more properties' as image number as per mine below:

Metadata Date: 2009:09:11 23:29:15+01:00
Lens: 17.0-55.0 mm f/2.8
Image Number: 8821
Raw File Name: DSC_3609.NEF
White Balance: As Shot
Temperature: 5200

Your exif info is currently on it's privacy setting so cannot see anything, your older images have the exif but no image count.

Not much help I'm afraid

Thanks YB. I doesn't have this on the Canon.

Someone has just pointed out the obvious to me. The file numbers reset to 0 every 10000 shots, if I look back through my archives I should be able to work out how many times I've clocked it.

Look in Photoshop, in Advanced file info you will find it, e.g. CS4:

I googled the same thing recently Nick, and came to the conclusion the figure is not available from the 5D. If you find anything good let me know!

It's not in there Beano.

I've just been through my files and I've shot about 65000 frames since I got it in September 2006.

Strange - I didn't know that you could suppress this sort of info scratchchin

Could lead to plenty of "turning the clocks back" !

Hi Ronnie wavey, trust you're well. It's not suppressed, it's completely unavailable unless you happen to be a Canon Service Centre or have a 1D

Another way of Canon segmenting their product line. The 5d series isn't a true pro camera so you don't need that information.

you need to go to a canon service centre to really discover the actual true number of actuations.

Oh! That's all a bit short-sighted/disappointing of Canon then. confused I thought Nikon were bad enough at that sort of stuff!

I think on later models you can work it out by folder value + actuations or there is a hex value. But as my 5d is up for sale in classifieds I've had a lot of questions about actuations and it would be nice to give a definite answer
