I used to have a Canon SLR...

then went to an IXUS digital...

problem is - I like bits of both, never really got on with the IXUS in terms of flexibility but love the digital media.

I am now quite tempted by the EOS300D which looks like very good value for money,

does anyone have one/rate one/want one/hate one?

I think everyone here has one, according to a number of recent threads which you could read. I have one and yes, it's thoroughly recommended.

I love it.

Once you get used to the controls and the fact that you can't use it in the same way, as the IXUS you'll wonder how you managed with out an SLR.

I'm not sure my photography skills do though, but grey winter days and an aversion to sitting in the sea don't help my cause.

It won't be long before you're gagging for a decent tripod, longer lens, better flash (the built-in one is dire, IMHO), filters, bigger CF cards, a battery grip, spare charger, rucksacks, remote shutter release, an A3 inkjet printer, faster PC, Photoshop CS, and so on, and so forth.

For what it's worth mine is a lower end FinePix S304Z and is fine for my skill level.

I know the feeling - i started with a borrowed Konica SLR with 40mm lens - then i had to give it back, so i bought a second hand Minolta X700 with 28mm lens - within a couple of months my stash have grown to;

X700 body
28mm lens
50mm lens
70-210mm Vivitar Series 1
70-210mm Sigma
400mm Sigma
Cokin P series filter system and 4 filters
Tripod
Billingham camera bag
camera rucksack (on order)
Minolta Flash gun
Minolta power winder
remote shutter release cable thing

Im sure theres a few more things lying around too - every time i go into Jessops i end up spending money!!

If you're going to the US anytime soon, get one there. With the current exchange rate, you can pick up the full kit for £540 as opposed to £850 in the UK!
