Hi all

I'm considering a visit to Yellowstone Nation Park next year with the other half and child (9 years) but whilst looking through the webiste for the area it's quite a minefield for places to visit as there are so many.

I want to go not only for a break but also to photograph the wildlife for a bit of practice.

Basically, has anyone been and where abouts do you recommend for lodgings and photo locations?

Cheers

In the park, i'd recommend spending some time at the Old Faithful Inn, the largest log building in the world and a wonder in its own right - try to stay stay in the old building, not the modern extensions

Apart from that, it's cheaper to stay just outside the park in West Yellowstone or Gardiner - you'll need a car anyway

Fantastic place to take a young 'un, for the geothermal features and wildlife

My wife and I visited this last August, our 3rd visit. We have stayed at West Yellowstone just outside the park to the NW, ok, and twice at Jackson about an hour south of the South Entrance. Jackson is great because you also get to stay in the middle of Jackson Hole with fantastic views of the Tetons. Alternatively if you want to be in the park close to the best wild life viewing areas there are some pretty good looking cabins at Tower/Roosevelt to the north of the park. The park is huge with quite low speed limits, 45mph, so don't underestimate the time to get around. Best areas for wild life in our experience are Hayden valley for grizzly bears and herds of buffalo then the Lamar valley for bear, black and grizzly, more buffalo, wolf if you are very lucky and loads of elk and other types of deer. Moose are also pretty common but in different habitat, plenty of them around Jackson together with coyote, bear, elk, foxes, buffalo, otter and beavers. Don't forget the Mammoth Hot Springs area for the various hot springs and geysers. To see plenty of wildlife its best to be either early or late and be patient. For photography I used an 18 200 zoom with a Canon 450, next time I will rent a 100 400 zoom, there was a recommendation for rental company on this site very recently.

Very pleased to give more assistance and detail if you need it, please e mail me.

I'm getting jealous now, twice I was scheduled to head out to Boise with my job and both times the work was cancelled before I got the fly - been dying to visit Yellowstone for years...
