After the dismal summer that we got here in the UK the girlfriend and I fancied a warm-ish holiday, we were looking for weeks but we couldn't decide on a place so I left it with the girlfriend to book the holiday. My only remit was that it was warm and they served beer.

Where did she end up booking?

ICELAND.
Where beer is £5 a go and the warmest temp we had was 5 degrees C!!

Here's some photos from the holiday, we only had 4 nights and so we decided to do all the tourist tours, it meant that I couldn't take any super duper photos because of the circumstances, but we visited some super duper places. I definitely want to go back for a weeks and hire out a silly 4x4 and just tour the country with the camera.

Anyway, I digress, onto the photos.....

Slightly on-topic for PH: A road.

A mountain

The Northern Lights (we were very lucky to see them apparently, they were there for about 4 minutes only and weren't exactly vibrant, hence why they're naff photos).

Not the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights

Don't fall off

That mountain, again

See the blue behind the mountains? That's a whopping great big glacier!

Neeeeeooooowwwwwwww

Some crazy dudes

A serious dude

Crooked view

A 5 minute walk from where I took this, they used to be-head people and throw them in the waterfall.

Lots of water, falling

Neeeeeeooooooowwwwww

Road outta the bus window.

Sunrise

A Church

Steam from the geothermal blue lagoon

Blue lagoon

A Geysir named Strokkur, I stroked myself pretty furiously when it errupted.

I visited Iceland earlier in the year, and it is an amazing place, some amazing photos btw, really like number 1. I agree that Strokkur is quite amazing, when I went we must have stood there for an hour watching it bubble up and go off over and over again. Did you get to see any glaciers close up? They are simply breathtaking .

Excellent photos there.

I visited Iceland last year with sixth form. It was breathtaking, and I'm hoping to back again as soon as I've got the money. We were all driven around in a bus which was fitted with off-road tyres and a driver with bks of steel. How he got it down some of the rough, icy tracks I don't know.

When we visited Strokkur our tour guide told us to stay upwind of the water as "it takes two minutes to boil the average tourist".

Did a tour of Iceland some years ago.... flew up to Akureyri in the north, hired a car and drove clockwise round the island back to Reykjavik over the next 2 weeks.... the scenery is stunning and ridiculously varied, except for trees, but even then there is Asbyrgi canyon.. but that only has birch trees of a certain height.
random google image

Was going to post a load of pictures but turns out I dont have them on this computer... however amongst other bits of scenery we saw a flat black desert, Asbyrgi canyon, a drive in volcano, a walk in volcano, lava tunnels, some geezers some glaciers some waterfalls and lots of puffins etc etc.. will see if i can dig out some of the better photos at some point.

Oh and I can recommend a Skoda Octavia 4x4.. they WILL go anywhere!

We did it last year - but took our own vehicle.. Which is why it brought back nice memories..

I'm sure you may remember me posting the images on here..

This was the route we did over three weeks.

The drive through the middle was excellent if a little thirsty on fuel - driving over volcanic sand doesn't half eat fuel.

These were the images from my trip.- A little of the Faroes as well both on the way up and back.

Mines is the Landrover 110 if you didn't guess

Oh, you complete rotten sod. We did three weeks this August in our Land Rover 130, along with a 110 and Discovery 2, unfortunately we had some completely pants weather. I thought my pics were reasonable until I saw yours - i've not seen any decent photos of the same type of driving we did - until now. I'll need to have a good rummage and see if i can identify any of the same spots, to compare shots! We're waiting for our article in Land Rover Owner magazine to be published, so can't post publicly to Flickr yet... though compared with yours, i'm sure they'd be a mahoosive letdown!

I agree, it was definitely hard work over that volcanic sand and rock, and the 130 is thirsty at the best of times!

we drove from Askja to Tungnfaell on the dreaded F910 - took nearly 9hrs and the only reason we kept going was that it wasn't quite dark enough to stop driving. Ghastly as a passenger, but the drivers all had great fun!
