I have finally decided to purchase a Canon 450D camera, next Monday I hope. My next issue is which memory to get. The 450D supports, SD, SDHC, and MMC. I shall probably go for 4GB, but not sure which format or make.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Important link in the chain, so, whilst I am not paranoid about it, I personally gravitate towards Sandisk, from reputable sources.

I've never had a card fail on me, but I would rather live with two 2Gb cards than one 4 Gb card, purely for the security against one failing when you're a thousand miles from the nearest shop half way down the Grand Canyon or something.

Play.com or 7dayshop or similar all appear to peddle genuine stuff at reasonable prices.

I'd stress reputable - 90% of the Sandisks on eBay are fake. The other brand to consider is Lexar, and people don't seem to fake them.

Righto, I'm off to open a memory card shop halfway down the Grand Canyon biggrin

Thanks guys for your replies re- manufacturer, but does anyone have a preference for format, IE, SD, SDHC, or MMC?

MMC is an old format that you don't see much any more.

SD has mainly replaced MMC.

SDHC is just the name for >4GB SD cards.

Did some research... Class 4 is 26x speed (4 Mb/sec) - about a tenth of current standards. This could affect review speed and also burst mode, depending on the camera's buffer.

That's why they were only £17!

They are indeed 4 mb a second. Apart from the Panasonics, I can't see above a class 6 for standard SD cards ? The Canon won't take SDXC cards that I am aware of.

Class 4: 4 MByte/s - 26x
Class 6: 6 MByte/s - 40x

I'm not quite sure what you're saying, but yes, you can get much faster cards to go in the Canon 450D.

I think I see the reason for the confusion now. The SD Association only officially classifies cards upto class 6, but the manufacturers make cards that far exceed the speed of class 6. For example this ones says class 6 (6MB/s) but actually does 20MB/s (as is 4 times the price per byte of the PNY ones):

Actually when I posted that, I hadn't realised that CF cards (which I use) are generally faster - I'd say 300x UDMA (45Mb/sec) was the current norm in CF-land.

SDHC have possibly swapped speed for capacity and small size - not sure.

Sandisk SDHC's from 7dayshop, think a 4GB ultra (class 10) cost £18 last time I looked, never had any problems with 7dayshop todate either.
