Is the 450D image quality going to be significantly worse than the 50D ? Or is it a case of having to look hard for the differences.
I'm thinking that perhaps low light performance might be slightly worse and obviously continuous shooting speed is lower, no top LCD etc but apart form the obvious differences, I'm not going to get a substantially inferior image am I ?
The reviews I've seen suggest that both are good but there's no easy comparison between them.
I was planning to get the 50D but the physical size and weight of it is inconvenient and I might find I don't take it with me on half the trips I do because of that. I'd rather have a camera I can take with me all the time.
I still plan using quality lenses.

I have the 350D and 40D, and there's not much difference in quality to be honest. I'm guessing it will be the same with your choices.
The advantage of the 50D is that it's weatherproof, and faster frame rate (6.3 shots per second, compared to 3.5 with the 450D). I prefer the feel of my 40D to be honest out of the two. I'm also guessing the 50D will handle low light better, my 350D is pretty noisy.

I chose the 450D over the 40D for exactly the same reasons that you're considering it over the 50D. I wanted to be able to take it more places with me.
In support of my assumption is the fact that I don't think I've taken a single shot with it where a lack of perfection was down to the camera rather than the user, and that's after about 8,000 shots.
Against my assumption is the fact that I find it so damned difficult to decide on what lenses & flashes to leave behind that the difference in body size is now pretty irrelevant!
Had I been comparing a 500D with a 50D then I'd have gone for the 50D without a second thought, as I cannot imagine a single scenario where I'd ever want to film HD video with crappy sound from the built in mic, so would resent paying for the ability to do so.
Given the difference in price between a 450D and a 50D though, I wouldn't hesitate in going for a 450D again, as it would leave a good chunk of cash left over for a very nice lens.

Thanks, just bought the 450D, £422 inc 18-55 IS Lens and delivery from Currys. I'll buy a better lens and sell the kit one if there's a market for them ?
The 50D was going to be £720 at least and I'd not carry it with me as much which would be pointless.
From memory, I got around £60 for my kit lens on Ebay. Having said that, it's actually not a bad lens, so give some thought to why you're replacing it, and what you're going to replace it with. The 50D was going to be £720 at least and I'd not carry it with me as much which would be pointless.
I know you said 450D, but I moved from a 400D to a 50D last June and it's in a different league.
Hit the go button in continuous mode and it's like a bloody machine gun whilst with a good Canon lens focusing as fast as need be. The low light capabilities are better than the 400D and the file sizes are larger. You have more options to save as RAW and jpeg at the same time plus a host of other additional features that I thought I wouldn't use, but I do.
To be honest, it won't help you if you shoot a bad shot, but it will help you if you shoot a good shot - I have also invested in some good glass over the last year or two which makes a big, big difference (24-70 f2.8 L & 70-200 f2.8 L), both of which also make a huge difference to a good shot.
Difficult decision to make to be honest...

I know . . . I would very much like the 50D but a lot of my summer time is spent on a motorbike and this year a lot of that in France so a big camera is much harder to carry than a small one. I'd rather take a camera and use it than risk getting pissed off with it and leaving it in the hotel.Hit the go button in continuous mode and it's like a bloody machine gun whilst with a good Canon lens focusing as fast as need be. Now I need a small, high quality lens - I suspect the 17-40 f4L but would like a 2.8. http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/c... shows how good the 17-40 is.
