Just treated myself to a Nikon D5000 and have been doing some long exposure stuff outside been getting some wonderful shots but they have abit too much orange in them (from light pollution) is there any specific settings on the camera i can used to cut this ? White Balance etc ?

are you taking RAWs ?

Yeah im shooting in RAW (for the first time ever) and just had a quick play around in Photoshop! My god editing RAW is nice easy without ruining the images biggrin

try adjusting the colout temp

White Balance is the setting you need - you've found it in PP but you should be able to adjust on camera, either by selecting the light source (ie tungsten, flash, sunny etc) or dialling in a specific temperature between 2500K and 10000K - there's not as much scope for adjustment as in PP mind you.

You might also find there are profiles for different settings in one of the menus, I'd imagine same place as you'd find the B&W option? If so look for something that allows you to turn down the saturation and that will mute the orange (and other colours).

Alternatively, shoot away from ambient light - several miles away and in the other direction if you can. I find the best nights for shooting are the couple of dates either side of a full moon. If it's clear, you can recreate daylight conditions over the space of a 5 min or-so exposure.
