A couple of months ago I bought a pair of new digital cameras

background info here http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I bought a Canon SX120is and a EOS 1000D

but to be honest I prefer to use the SX120is over the bulky D-SLR, and the little SX takes some cracking photos..tbh I'm considering selling the 1000D as I don't see when it will get a look in frown

I rushed into buying the 1000D to use for the bikeshow, as it turned out I took the Both with me on preview day and then both cameras again when me and the Mrs went again a few days after...tbh the SX took the better pictures

the trouble with the 1000D is it's too big to take on the bikes, and when we go out in the car it's too bulky to carry around all day

has anyone else not really gelled with a D-SLR after being used to Digital compacts for years?

Depends on your useage, definately. In some cases recently, a camera phone has been the perfect choice. No need for hi-res, no processing needed, just a snap to make a record (in my case where a set of wires were laid through the car)

Other times I need more resolution than I have with a D300 and it's crossed my mind to upgrade to full frame. Just cant quite get it into the budget unless I sold one of the toy cars. Horses for courses

A couple of months seems not long enough....

However, I sold my Nikon D200 (whilst waiting for the D700 replacement) and bought the compact Panasonic LX3. I was surprised I did not miss the DSLR for the results of the compact camera are stunning with it's impressive F2 24mm-60 Leica lens.

The new slightly larger compacts (Panasonic GF1, Olympus Pen E) with interchangeable lenses have certainly got my interest piqued.

It is also that my needs will have changed over the years, but I am actually using the camera ever more because of it's easy accessibility.

I like compacts but all too often I find myself shouting 'focus you bar steward' and remember why I got into SLR's in the first place.

At times like this I invoke the teachings of Winnie-the-Pooh.

The correct answer is of course 'Both' smile

ETA Just in case that sounds glib, it's not, simply a case of horses for courses. No compact can do all the things a DSLR can do, and equally, you don't always want a DSLR round your neck.

That was more D300 and 4 cars, vs D700 and 2 cars smile

I can save your agonising and possiby your marriage by pointing out that the D300 and D700 are the same resolution - 12Mp!

arguably the D300 has more pixels - on a density basis. They're both great cameras IMHO.

I bought a Canon S90 just before Xmas and it's very good. But if I ever need to photgraph something that moves then my D80 wins every time...

yes, yes but would you swap the D300 for a D700 (assuming your current lenses were not an issue) smile

Tried both 'in combat' and went back to the D200. Then got another D200 for backup. Figure that out!

You like D200's smile
But seriously I have noticed that prices have crept up recently, reflecting demand.

I prefer using a DSLR over a compact because a DSLR has a proper viewfinder,
and the odd compact (Micro 4/3rds) that you can add a viewfinder to,
is then no longer 'compact'.
Trouble is, I am getting less fond of carrying my DSLR around.

That went well I thought hehe

The D700 has much more detail and clarity available than the D300, regardless of sensor similarity. Same lens, same test conditions. There was just more pop from it.

Anyway, I forgot about my little Lumix. I never use it
