I've got a Nikon coolpix S210 and I'd like to take some pics of the Griff to possibly put on canvas in my hall. Now I'm no photographer but with a bit of professional help manipulating the final image I'm sure I could get some personalised art in my home.

Is an 8 megapixel point and squirt camera up to the job?

Typically this is the kind of picture I take paperbag

Oh, and I'm not looking for criticism for my choice of camera btw tongue out

It depends on how fussy you are and how large a print you want. I'd guess a 20x30 print would probably come out OK for most people.

Taking a good photo is more important though.

I liked the sign as I thought it looked a bit continental paperbag My thoughts are if I take enough pics with enough pixels in them then sooner or later I'll get one that is worth manipulating. I just don't want to waste my time if a simple point and shoot isn't up to the job of taking a picture up to a metre wide that will be printed on canvas.

I have a 30"x20" canvas print from a 6Mp D70 image (albeit shot RAW) and it's acceptable.

I think the same size from an 8Mp compact would be fine but keep the ISO as low as possible and set image size/JPG quality to 'max', because noise and compression artifacts could appear with small pixels and big enlargement.

Cool, I've got a tripod somewhere and I *think* it's got a timer so I'll give it a go.

Are there any top tips for a photographic numptie?

Yes, don't park the car so it's half in sun and half in shade smile

Yes think about the framing of the picture, try getting more of the car in the frame and loose the Ill have a P please sign. If the camera has a manual ISO setting set it for lowest ISO you can for the conditions.
