Price for a Nikon D200 ?
Discussion
Looking to replace my D70s which needs to be retired and sold before I kill it off completely.
Next purchase will be pre-owned, like the D70s --
I've looked at the likely contenders --
D90 - -too expensive
D80 -- seems promising
but for a bit more -- how about a D200 ?
There's no way I can run to a D300 (!!)
What does the D200 offer, over the D80 -- apart from a metal body .....
And what should I pay for a good secondhand D200 (I have found one but am unsure of its worth...)
cheers for any help.
edit to add -- what about battery life -- my D70s is ancient and has fabulous battery life -- I don't want to buy something that will not last a day or so on a charge....

Grays have a D200 for £399. I think that's a bargain from a posh-Nikon-shop!
Battery life should be fine - and the D-xxx range is a step up from the D-xx whatever way you look at it.
Simpo will be along in a minute - his '200 suits him better than a '300 or even a '700. And for about £400 I don't think you can go wrong ('course for about £600 you could probably get a '200 with a brick tied to it - aka the D2X)

Yep, get one. All the stuff on my website was taken with a D200. The D300 has a stop better high-ISO performance but it costs much more - so for a few hundred pounds you can't go wrong. The D200 gives me the controls I need where I need them - on the top for quick access. It has enough pixels for all normal purposes. It handles well. Faster scrolling would be good but no camera is perfect.edit to add -- what about battery life -- my D70s is ancient and has fabulous battery life -- I don't want to buy something that will not last a day or so on a charge....
Battery life - I get about 2-300 shots per battery, but I do a LOT of chimping - and when Beano visited Bloke Hall I stole all his batteries anyway so it's not a problem

How does the D200 fair at high ISO? I use a D80 at present and start to twitch if the light forces me anything over about 320! It's the only thing that really frustrates me about the camera.
depends how you look at your pictures... my D70s is regularly used at 1600......Edited by gary71 on Monday 18th January 21:17
Certainly at up to 800 I struggle to notice much difference if printing 6x4

My default setting is 320, but I'll take it as far as 800 if essential (eg if I'm already at f2.8 and shutter speed is critical - think dull church and 70-200 lens.). It all depends how much noise you can live with - certainly none of my customers have commented on it in around 35,000 photos (but they are general public and not Vogue picture editors... I think the D80 and D200 are about the same for noise but not sure. Remember - if you look for problems you'll find them

Well, I am trying to think back to when I had a D70 and was looking to change. The D80 was, IIRC, out of the equation simply for not using CF cards. Plus won't your spare battery also be useful in a D200 (EN-EL3A?).
Or have I got that all wrong?
I guess that's my point Beano --- I don't have a spare battery - never needed one.Or have I got that all wrong?
The D70s battery life is staggering --
Chaps convince me that the D200 is better than the D80 otherwise I might have to be sensible....
edit to add :: why does it matter if the D80 doesn't use CF cards?

OK - well I wrote out a "must have" list. It's all too easy to say "well X is better than Y".
In this case, I happen to think that a D200 would be better than a D80. Or a D90 would be better than a D200. Then a D300 would be better than a D200 or a D90, and a D3 would be better than a D300 and a D3s would be better than a D3. Hence you better sell your car, mortgage your house and sell your body on the street........
But, in your case, it's down to whether it does all the things that you want it to. Hence I went for a secondhand brick. For my criteria it is damn solid and you can turn it on it's side and you have a shutter button there, plus you can see the four corners of the viewfinder if you wear specs.
In short, the '80 is a step forward from the '70(s), and unless you are surpassing its capabilities it'll be your composition and technique that you need to work on, not more £££s on the camera!
The main reason I haven't got a D3 (yet) is that I can't take better pictures than a D2x is capable of!
You should go for the D80!

...don't get me started!

It doesn't, but haven't you got a bag full of CF cards already - I did with my '70 and I didn't really want to throw them all away. Well, more precisely, you should have heard the names I called Nikon, for what I still see as totally daft and effing ridiculous - if I wanted to run two Nikon bodies I wouldn't want to have to carry two sorts of memory and two types of spare battery!!!

How many memory cards does a man need?
I have one that I use and a spare.......

My point would be the same whether a D70 or D3x

I'm on the D2x and I think, potentially, either a D200 or a D80 would produce just as good results for me!
Go for the D80, and for peace of mind get a second memory card in case one gives up just when you wnat to take an important shot!!!

agree. camera doesn't matter that much. ofcourse if you have d700 or d3(x,s) you never look back on the DX. I only miss high iso function, as ISO3200 in FX is amazing ! get lenses
I agree with you -- I have the lenses I want. The camera is just a tool.
It will get dirty, be left outside, ride in waxed jacket pockets and generally be abused.....
(apologies to "Ian in Lancs" if you are reading but your 10-20mm has a fair bit of mileage on the clock now......)
