My Father had a Nikon SLR back then and was wondering if someone could ID it for me from this description.
All I remember about it was it was black, had a large viewfinder on top which was like another square block on top of the camera's body,
journalists everywhere seemed to have at least one around their neck.
and I seem to recall it cost an arm and a leg new at the time, but was lovely and light to handle
can anyone offer a suggestion as to the model

I had an F5 (I think) it was the top of the amateur range in the mid eighties, it was also crap and I was glad to be rid of it.
I still have my old Canon A1 which is a fantastic camera.
edited, It was an F501 not F5
Glad you corrected that! F5 was the pro model, I had it and it was fab. Only thing that let it down was that it used film. Part ex'd it to buy a D1I still have my old Canon A1 which is a fantastic camera.
