Guys

I have been looking at the Nikon SB600 and SB900 flashs, there is a large price difference in these 2, but as a newbie I am not sure what extra I will get with the more pricey 900 model. Any help would be much apreciated.

thanks
James

More power, more modes, longer zoom, more stuff

SB900 can act as a master flash with CLS if you use that, and has SU4 mode. Also, the 900 has a sync port, handy for plugging in a PW. 600 just has a hotshoe and proprietary IR receiver

They are worth the extra, and Nikon throw in some gels too

That is a very good way of summing up CLS!

SB600 Stuff Quotient: 4/10
SB900 Stuff Quotient: 10/10

(The SB900 also has a very fast recycle time)

hehe McNally...take note!

The CLS thing...great when it works, I just get the impression from the videos I've seen they must have screened on the 15th take. Just doesnt happen for me at all, easier to set up with a meter and go manual

i think i am right in saying that you can also upgrade the firmware in an SB900 smile

SB-600's are perfectly adequate - I have 3 to use with my D-300s and D80. I use the three SB-600's as a main, fill and hair lights - infinitely variable. The SB-600 recharges quicker than Bowen studio lights that I also use. The only limitation is the D-300s can only trigger 3 groups; in built flash (which I only use as a trigger) and channel A and B. The SB-900 is overkill. I'd buy more than 1 SB-600 instead.
