Got a digital camera for my birthday last week, it can take both SD and MMC cards...

a) Whats the difference?
b) whats the best?
c) Was looking at prices on ebuyer - these seem good, any better..?

It has 16mb on board, but my own logic tells me that won't last 5 minutes and so i want to buy a card soonish, and get using it.

Thanks in advance

Check the Price of both type and go for the cheapest..

I dont think there is any performance advantage an amatuer will notice but the pros will correct me

Look on eBay too, memory cards are seriously cheap from the US, I've bought all of mine from the states, from CF to Smart media and memory Stick Duo.

For Compact Flash, www.7dayshop.com seem to be the cheapest at the moment.

They might be cheap but they appear to be unbranded. I tend to buy branded cards as I'd hate to be out shooting all day and then have the card fail when it comes to download.

For only £20 more than a unbranded 512Mb card on 7-day shop you can get a SanDisk Ultra on eBay, from a UK source.

The other option is to buy a medium sized card and an image bank, which is something I do when away from my laptop for a while e.g. on holiday.

I got a 256MB Sony memory stick, brand new, unopened, off ebay, from America. I paid £56+pp, whereas over here, Jessops were charging £150.

TT Tim - agreed!
I paid even more and went for the San Disk Ultra II.
Sooper Dooper performance which makes a noticable difference.

But when the card goes in the hole and does the job, and given that a lot of the brands come from companies most people won't have heard of regardless of whether they are any good. In these cases (the majority) most people will shop by price and 7 day shop is hard to beat.

Thats interesting, I bought an aftermarket noname 64 mb card for my olympus and the performance is pants compared to the 16mb card that came with it. I did think it might be down to the size of the card..

However I suppose it could be that the branded card has faster memory access..

I've got one of those, but it was pricy (£260 for 1GB). It's very fast though which is good for multi-shot sequences with the EOS300D.

Slightly off topic: Sandisk were taken for $100 million by a lawyer working in a law firm they were using last year.

Thanks, I don't *need* mental performance, or the price that such performance can attract - the camera simply isn't good enough for that. I still have a very decent SLR which i use for all shots. I wanted a digi just for point-and-shoot shots that can go on the website, therefore my memory card requirements are quite simple.

So, notwithstanding the advice so far, any definitive recommendations for a decent size (256Mb??), decent quality card for a point-and-shoot without attracting mental prices??

Oh, and would be grateful if someone could just mention the difference between SD and MMC. Cheers!
