It was such a great looking afternoon today I thought I'd venture out into the Welsh mountains to stretch the legs on the 911 and play with my new camera. I've been experimenting with off camera flash to light the car, with mixed results, but it's something I need to try more of.

I need to take a car wash with me though! By the time you get out to these locations the car is filthy biggrin

Strangely enough the highest mountain pass in Wales was still covered in snow and ice... Didn't see that coming smile

I may, or may not, have felt the need to perform a doughnut or two before leaving.

Helpful criticism welcome!

No. 1 is nice, but doesn't do it for me. The car being so central pulls the eye completely even though there is actually a nice backdrop to the photo.

Nos. 2 & 3 are particularly nice. The car is lovely and sharp but a bit more subtle in the scene than in #1, the lighting works really well for me there too. Really like those two.

Thanks for the comments, I agree about the first shot, so much potential with that backdrop, but maybe not the best outcome. I have several shots taken at the same time, so I'll experiment tonight with a different balance between car and scenery. Same composition though, so I can't fix that bit now!

I think for number 1 you've just got there a little too late. IMHO the landscape needs to be a bit brighter but the location and composition I like.

Of the shots my favourite is number 3 which I think you have executed very nicely

Thanks Chris,

I'm probably going to try an HDR on number 1, I'm not usually a fan, but maybe this is appropriate usage. I've got a seven stop range of photos to chose from, so I should be able to get some brightness back into the landscape.

That's the second request for more light in the rear of this shot, I'll edit it tonight with another layer and see how it comes out.

My new camera is a Nikon D300s, although I don't think there is anything here I couldn't have done with my D80. It just feels nicer to use, and the shutter makes a better noise!

Gary I like them all!

How did you take each one? Have you stitched several shots together or did you just run a long shutter and fire the flash manually?

Hi Rob,

Most of them are composite images, except the shot over the engine cover.

I used a cheap radio trigger from ebay, set the self timer to 5 seconds pressed the button then legged it to across to point the flash in the right direction!

Number 2 for me, lovely composition and lighting. Number 1 would of stolen it had it been for the lighting up of the car.

Sorry I've managed to replace the original of No.2 on Flickr rather than add another version! In the process I've just broken the links. I've edited my posts to put a link to a the original copy on Photobucket.

Alternative treatment to the first one I uploaded before.

HDR from 7 images, 1 stop apart. Then played with for a while in Lightroom to make it look real again.
