Hi Guys

Don't normally post on this forum but wondered if anyone can help

I am wanting to buy a good quality compact
I already have a Nikon DSLR which I use a lot and also a Ricoh Caplio R5
but have never really been happy with the quality off the Ricoh.

Mostly wanted for people pics - parties etc and mostly indoor - otherwise I use the DSLR
and for the convenience of carrying around in a pocket etc

Can anyone suggest a compact that I can get pics towards the quality of my DSLR
or at least which is the best quality for the money

Thanks
Richard

320td Sport is the best Compact....

Leica X1 should do the trick

Lumix lx3 with a fast leica lens, fab little camera, and shoots nice hd video as well. Had one for about 6 months and I am very pleased with the low light performance. Great bang for the buck.

+1 We bought one a couple of months ago for occasions when our big camera is too big and I'm very pleased so far. Slightly bigger than a "normal" compact but small enough to go in a pocket, and seems reasonable quality up at ISO 800 although it does go to 3200. Dedicated buttons or easy menu access for all the settings you need. Also has two custom settings modes in which you can store a complete set-up so if you're constantly switching between two shooting conditions it's easy peasy. Nicely made too with good quality feel and materials.

Canon G Series
Full manual controls, also has a flash hot shoe, I believe it's the only compact to have this feature.
I've owned a G7 give it real hard usage for 3 years, no probs, Now use it in the underwater housingbiggrin
Just bought a new G9 for day to day use at £250 a real bargain IMO
Just remember to use it on the lowest ISO in this case that'll be 80.
The nikon equivelants are probably as good though I ain't owned one myself.
Forget all the other brands just buy a Canon or Nikon, these guys only make cameras, not hifis or other electronics so you're gettin what you pay for.
Have Fun

Can't comment on the G series, but the Lumix LX3 mentioned above also has a hot shoe (as well as built in little flash). It's not full TTL unless you buy a dedicated flash, but apparently works perfectly well with other flash guns in manual mode. I say apparently because I've got a 430ex but I've not tried to use it on the LX3 yet. I guess the Canon camera would communicate fully with Canon flash guns?

Thanks for the replies - even the ones in the usual PH banter manner!!!!

The Leica is out of my price range on this one

I will have a close look at the others asap

One of the main criteria for me tho was the size - most likely one with a totally flat lens in case when shut type

A friend has a Canon (sorry don't know which one yet) that is a true compact like this
and seems to take good photos

Thanks for the help so far

Cheers
Richard

I last bought a compact in '06 I think, but bought a Sony, still have it and for the money it was a great camera. I had another Sony prior to that, and my first port of call if buying a compact would again be a Sony - no idea on what model though unfortunately.

Thank you Felters - that looks much more like the answer I was looking for
and the blurp even says "for someone who already has a DSLR"

Now I just don't like the black colour - but could live with that

Cheers
Richard

How about a Panasonic GF1? I find the quality very close to my Canon 30D.

It will fit in a jacket pocket, but not a shirt pocket.

How about an LX3?
