can anyone recommend any of these?

I'm talking about 50-100 quid handheld digital thingmies, just for filming things like the kids parties etc

I don't know anything about them
do they record directly into .avi files or something?
what should I be looking for?

thanks in advance

I don't know anything about video cameras, but do you have a digital stills camera (compact or SLR) with a video function?

Both our digital compact cameras take perfectly adequate video footage, and while you can't zoom while recording (like a proper video camera) I don't find that an issue.

I think there may be a max file length (15 mins?) but again that might be sufficient unless you want to set the camera up and leave it running. Big capacity memory cards are getting cheaper and cheaper.

Just a thought,

The one on the link below is owned by a couple of members on here, seems to get good reviews:

I am considering one myself, once the credit card statement isn't making a dent in the carpet below the letterbox.
