Hi. We are contemplating a safari next year so I am thinking a telephoto lens for my Eos 7d might be a good idea.

My initial thoughts are that due to the high price of buying one I would perhaps be better off hiring.

I then thought it might be sensible to hire one this year and go somewhere like Scotland or Wales for a few days to familiarize myself and get competent with the lens. Then if I get the results I want I have the option to hire or purchase (funds permitting) next year.

So two questions. Do you think this is a good idea or a waste of time/money? And from experience can anyone recommend the lens I should aim for?

I admit I am often wallet led and would probably go for a more expensive Canon lens when maybe something like a Sigma could do the job equally as well.

From a keen amateur, over to you pro's

Thanks

Currently looking for a zoon for my 7D and must say I am tempted by some of the Simga offerings. Keeping an eye out for a second hand 120-300 f2.8 or perhaps a new 120-400 f4 which after looking through some piccies seem to be good lenses.

I find typing the lens name in to the search on flickr will take you to the respective groups so you can have a look at some shots. That's what has really made me look at the Sigmas as opposed to Canon. As for size of them type in the lens names in to youtube and there are a few reviews on there to give you some idea of weight/size/handling.
